Has Anyone ever tried to fit new speakers in an old Merc?
I have a 1983 280 TE estate and I'm thinking of updating the now mouldy speakers. I took them out and noticed that they are a very specific size and shape.
Has anyone fitted speakers in one before? and what speakers did you use?

Cheers.

It was many Years ago when I changed the fronts on dash to Pioneer, a big improvement.

Did you have to make a specific insert for those?

I think they are 12 cm diameter

they look quite similar to the w124 fronts. I think Blaupunkt made/make a specific fitting for Merc fronts. I had some Sony in the front of our 124, and the fitting wasn't as good as the Blaupunkts I replaced them with. The sound didn't change much , but it sounds a bit warmer now.

They are a direct fit, the main improvement was higher sound level with more treble, or shall we say a brighter sound. I only threw them away 6 weeks ago.

12cm speakers are very hard to find. I got a set of 13cm and using a Dremel cut them down to fit. Best thing to do would be to bring your old speakers to a specialist ICE retailer and ask for their advice.

In the front: the unit is only 10cm wide and the speaker is about 8.5cm or 3.5"
I was thinking maybe I could try and get a 3.5" speaker and cut the old ones out of the plastic unit to replace them.
In the back: I think the seaker is 10cm or 4" so I think these should be easier to find and fit..
Thanks for all your advice.

i managed it

i have a w202 c180 95plate and suffered trying to find direct replacements.
in the end i changed my 6.5" door speakers for 5.25" jbl gto's much better and louder, now compliments the dash tweeters. however i did uses some spacers to bring the speakers forward as i was not using the stupid bracket thing the originals came in. the back doors i had to clip away some tracks of the rear bracket and put i think 4" jbl gto's in this improves the sound drastically all round.

however i then disconnected the rear shelf, removed some sponge and housed some sony 6x9s on a piece of wood by drilling from within the boot. i now have superb crystal clear and punchy sounds

hope you win coz the speakers are buggers. all in all 120 for jbls and fitting not bad, :p the rear i did myself.
