As a result of this thread I ordered a couple of LED jobbies thinking they would fit the rear pillars of my S204 - wrong!! Those have 6W W5W/501 bulbs in them, so I tried a couple of spare W5W LED's that I have, and they flickered even though they're supposed to be canbus error free - and they work in the side and tail lights OK. It may be that the rear pillar lights dim up and down, and that is causing the flicker, sun's too bright right now to test that theory. I'd really like to fit sonething brighter not only in the pillar fittings but also in the lights on the tailgate itself, which are also (I think) W5W/501's.

So - I now have LED front footwell lights! A word to the wise re removing these - they pry out from the side opposite the power feed, and there is a recess in the appropriate short side of the fitting, for a trim removal tool or similar. Of course, you can only see this once you've taken the damned thing out, so try prying one short side, if no joy, try the other side, they pop out fairly easily.

Update :
these are the ones I bought : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Mercedes-SMD-LED-Footwell-Courtesy-Luggage-Visor-Mirror-Glove-Box-Trunk-Light/371760751285?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Mercedes-SMD-LED-Footwell-Courtesy-Luggage-Visor-Mirror-Glove-Box-Trunk-Light/371760751285?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

When I installed them I just gave a quick cursory look to check they came on, but in bright sunlight it meant crawling into the footwell! Now it's almost dark I've had another look, and they come on for 1 second, go off for 5, come back on for 1, go off for 5 etc etc. They're supposed to be canbus error free and suitable for my car, so I've messaged the seller for advice. No idea what's causing them to flash like that!

Plus, I found the load area lights in the rear pillars do dim up and down automatically, so I guess LED for those is a non starter.

OP, can you please post a link to the footwell lights you bought!

Yep mine do that on my c207, open the door they come on bright, ignition on
they flash twice, don't know why, then they stop on low light while your driving, when you stop, ignition off
open door, they go bright again, so when you open the door there nice and bright , when you're driving there dimmed, as for the flashing don't know, but only lasts a few seconds, i can live with that. :)

I haven't tried turning the ignition on, just opened the door and watched, after they'd flashed on and off 4-5 times I closed the door, locked and unlocked the car and opened the door - same again, so useless for helping getting into the car in the dark.

Hmm, mine are on bright when entering/exiting the car , only flash twice when ignition on, then they dim
and stay dimmed.

I've had all interior lights replaced by LED (COB mostly) 3½ yrs ago.
No flickering, flashing, etc. Dimming works perfectly fine too.

Only one bulb had to be replaced since (shortly after fitting, about three years ago).
None failed since.

Didn't have the factory footwell lights, so retrofitted my own, blue LEDs.
Permanently on, in front footwells. Well over two years now.

I like the idea of the brighter footwell and boot lights. Any problems with the light failure diagnostics?

I've had no response yet from my seller, I'm considering opening an eBay case for return of faulty items. Could be interesting as it's a far east mob using a Southampton drop shipper! Annoying, as if they would stay on they'd be great.

Haven't yet tried installing one in the glovebox light, and they're no good as boot lights on a C class 204 estate - and not sure I'd want something that bright on the glove box let alone the sun visor vanity light!

In my car, I've had no problem with boot light error messages (not a single one in 3½ years), and the SAM doesn't know about footwell lights, so can't be any ;)

I must say - I love driving my car at night: the blue ambient light is very subtle, and yet noticeable and relaxing ... not to the point when one falls asleep, I might add, before someone inevitably suggest so. :) The road ahead is brightly lit as well, following the recent upgrade ...

Well, this is odd. I pulled the nearside footwell LED and replaced it with the original fitting (but with a 16W 501 from when I changed the reversing lights to LED), put the LED in the glove box fitting - and it works without flashing. So, I then pulled the offside footwell LED and put it in the nearside vanity mirror - and it works. I have no idea why the LED's did not work in the footwells, but possibly they come on initially dim like the lights in the rear pillars and, I think, the main overhead courtesy lights, and that's what confused the LED's. However, another strange thing is that, after replacing the nearside footwell LED with an ordinary bulb, the offside footwell LED was on but not flashing before I removed it! However, I still replaced the footwell fitting with the original but with a 16W 501 so both sides are the same.

So - panic over, I'm happy to have a nice bright glove box light, not sure about the vanity light, will have to see if it's distractingly bright (or too cold for my wife checking her hair etc) once it's dark later today.
