Well you have a way forward, so that’s good and not the worst result

At least once its done you won't need to worry about it for a good while!
Yeah, and to fair, I underpaid for the car by about £500 so I'm not really losing anything, although I will be putting a call in the car dealer as legally, he should cover the costs. But being a smalltime dealer, I expect it won't be an easy ride!

Keep the dealer fully informed of the codes you had read , and give him the option of doing the work or paying for another garage to do it for him . Let him know in a nice way that you are "fully" aware of your rights as a purchaser and his "obligation" as a dealer as well .

ATF if its really black I wouldn't waste money on changing it, especially if there's a lot of material in the drained fluid,
usually it makes the gearbox worse as all the particles floating around in the oil have now gone and the fresh fluid cant grip the clutch plates.

Put the old fluid back in after draining and inspecting don't waste your money on new ATF.

I would get a recon box and TC fitted.

I don't agree,

mine was BLACK 42k miles, well known indy here fully expected it to be "disgusting" and he was correct.
auto boxes need clean oil
if after a change there are faults its because there are faults, not the oil

Oil goes black because it becomes contaminated or overheated. Either was damage is present as a result and gearbox life will have been shortened.
Contaminated oil will contain minute pieces of friction material from the bands and clutches. Highly abrasive and not what you want coursing through the bearings, pump and valves in an automatic gearbox.
Overheated oil will have been damaged and it's lubrication qualities impaired as a result. Again not good to have flowing through the bearings, pump and valves of an automatic gearbox.
How much damage is present in each case as a result of poor oil can only be found by a strip down but you can be assured damage will have been done if it's been like that any length of time.
I get the comment about changing the box but that's also not without risk.

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
I mean really black oil with lots of particles and being changed because of gear box faults.

I find its a waste and the money best put to a replacement unit :)

Especially if (avg prices)

Conductor plate £120
Oil, Filter and seal kit £120
Labour £130
Total £370

And still the box can have problems urghh :(

Ok, all done. Turns out the speed sensor had popped up to far and actually hit some cog (can't remember exact name) so full Gearbox service, new speed sensor, re-burr teeth on the said cog, total clean up of valve block and its smooth as silk. Looks like initial thoughts were right and gearbox had never been serviced or oil changed. £741 lighter but hey, If I wanted cheap & average I would have bought a Ford right!

Yes the speed sensor is not available as a separate part unlike the solenoids.

Hi Cloudsurfer,
since your last post 12.02.2018, and today 01.03.2018, you have had a few weeks driving the car around after all the work was done.....how is it now? Were the repairs you carried out a success? Especially the oil change? ( I mean replacing the black oil with fresh oil, did not adversely affect the transmission? ) The oil in mine is also black, but showing a red tinge around the edges in a glass when held up to the light..and does not have the dreaded burnt smell. Car is driving fine, so I am cautiously optimistic.... will drain the oil next week, or as soon as the Beast from the East departs....
Regards, Jim2 :)

Don't worry Jim , the ATF change will not harm the box , if it does develop a fault it is probably because it was going to have one anyway as a mileage/maybe not changing ATF cause .

As you are looking for a dipstick, I'd safely say that it's the 722.6 5speed transmission. If so, Google MB 722.6 trans dipstick and you will get a selection to choose from. I went for the 1200 mm one. It's way too long and overhangs by about 30 cms, but that's not a problem at all...better to have it too long than too short. Its the plastic measuring tip thats important as it has stop to prevent it going too far into the transmission. Sorry I can't help with the code's, but I'm pretty sure that someone will be along to help.
