My trusted 1989 190E has reached 97k and i have been glancing back thru old MOT's and service history. Its next service is due in september. I mite treat it to a special service at my local merc dealer. Should i be considering having the automatic transmission fluid drained, flushed, sump dropped and filter changed?? Is this type of service particularly expensive?

NO!
The worst possible place to take a 190 would be a main dealer. What you need is a good local specialist who has actually worked on a 190 (few if any dealer mechanics will have - not than many will have worked on a 1990's C class!). They will part you from a lot of money (£100 per hour) and advise thousands of pounds worth of unnecessary repairs for things that are a bit out of manufacturers tolerances but perfectly ok, but that's about it. The indie can check the kinds of things that do go on your car and fix them before they go.

Yes - this should be done every 40k. Also have the diff oil done.
