A quick test to determine if it is the starter or not.
There's a small plug near the battery positive terminal with 2 or 3 wires. One of them has a purple trace, this one goes directly to the starter solenoid. Attach your test light or meter to that wire and crank the engine, if you get 12v while cranking then your starter is faulty.
Not the easiest job to do. You'll need to remove both rear engine mounts and lower the back of the engine.

Cheers, unfortunately the vehicle is not local to me, was considering to do the job myself to keep costs down but the vehicle is over 150 miles away from me!. My father in law is in the process of obtaining quotes, its an automatic, not sure if that makes the job a little easier compared to the manuals.

From what I have read the job can apparently be done without dropping the engine

But expecting quotes between £500 - £800! :(

I'm in Hammersmith. I know Preston is far.

Shame! Was considering doing the job myself but that would mean travelling up there.

Can the job be done from the top? Any advice/guidance you can provide? If I were to do it

Where would you recommend getting the replacement starter from?

My father in law has taken the car to a local garage its not a merc specialist, unfortunately its not cvm as they couldn't see the car for another two weeks!

However the garage has stated the its not the starter motor, it appears there is no power getting to the starter!

Which means its a wiring fault which could take endless hours to pinpoint! :(

Has anyone come across this issue?

Hi
As it is an automatic, it could be that the ECU thinks the car is in gear, and thus does not let you start the car.
