If it's the pulsation dampener it's not steering related but suspension related. It's on and active all the time the engine is running. I've discovered myself that the sound travel from the engine bay of a W215 is a bit weird, the sound doesn't move in predictable ways and what you hear from the front may be coming from the back.

If your pulsation dampener is under the driver's side wing you may well be hearing it from behind the firewall bulkhead. Certainly there's only a few things that can whine. Is it the ABC pump itself, does it sound a bit like a knackered turbo?

That is true and so hard to detect, if it had failed I presume that it could still have some effect otherwise no point in having one.

Yes, does sound a bit like knackered turbo or idler bearing. If I lowered the suspension would the ABC pump still be working? ..

The pump is belt-driven direct from the engine and so as Naraic says it's constantly spinning.

I had a knackered pump and it sounded just like a turbo bearing failure... constant low speed whiney dudududududududu noise, and yes I made it in my mind while typing it too.

Listening to your video, it sounded just like mine when the pulsation damper had failed, so the pump could be the cause, its mounted at the front. If you can run the engine and with care, use a wooden handled large screwdriver place the blade on the pump and the handle to your ear, you might pick up the sound.

Exactly how my failing pump was diagnosed.

Update

Thought I would update you on noise diagnosis. Started engine and with the long pry-bar to ear tested various area's. As mentioned earlier by Television and Craiglxviii p/steering pump was noisy. What I didn't know the pump has two separate sections, one for p/steering and the other for ABC. However to rule out any further noises I proceeded to remove the ' serpentine belt ' i.e. alternator/water pump belt . Had to remove the electric fan complete with shroud. Bit tricky but eventually came out. removed belt started engine. Noise gone. Whew, well at least it's not the engine internals. Checked idler pulley's, see attachment No.4 very noisy, No.8 noisy, No.5 ok and tensioner quite, although I will replace them all along with fluid and filters. Thankyou for your help. Can members recommend a Mercedes dealer who gives our club a decent discount?. My local dealer seems to add a percentage. :(:(

You can buy these pumps on eBay, reconditioned for €550. They are rebuilt and come with a 24 month warranty, look for seller www.exclusive-auto.de Make sure to order one with the pulley wheel on it, you'll need to specify on ordering. There is a €00 core deposit which is refunded when you send your own pump back. The inlet valve assy will need swapping over from your old pump to the new one too (2 screws, 5 minutes).

The new pumps from MB are £900+ and come with 12 months warranty.

I have a recon pump on my car, fitted only a couple of months ago. Turned up 3 days after ordering.

You have some excellent indies in Essex who can handle the pump replacement, dependent on where you are located in Essex. My car is currently with Welwyn Merx who is doing my ABC work and I'd fully recommend him if you're near that way.

Thanks for info. As I am retired mechanic and still have a few contacts I am going to make enquiries to have the pump overhauled locally. I will remove, refit and flush system. Replace noisy idlers. See how we go :)

Do take care when refitting as the pump must never be allowed to run dry, that is for both systems.

OK, I originally wanted to do this myself. The big problem that you'll have is to break open the pump you have to remove the pulley. It's hard-shrunk onto the shaft- fairly short shaft- and requires a LOT of heat to get on. This was my main concern. I weighed up the £300 cost for replacement against the buggeration factor and decided that I'd go with the remanufactured 2-yr warranty instead.

O-rings to overhaul will cost around £90-100. I sourced these first. Ypu cannot buy the kit mentioned in the link below any more, if you want to get your own O-rings give me a shout as I have the sourcing details.

See this thread here for someone who has done exactly this.

That's brilliant Craig? ... It will have to wait a week or so as I am on holiday. The info is really helpful. Found a local pump specialist who might be able to overhaul it. He's a bit busy at moment will call him in couple weeks. Had a quote from Local Mercedes dealer:- pump £430 exchange. Total cost with all filters, idlers and fluids would cost £926. Made a note of the site you mentioned. I am tempted. Just checking me options. What's the cost of the kit?

Tried to post pictures under the correct heading. Came up ' you don't have authorisation to post under this heading '. Tried the various options given in the forums. posted pictures in my albums.

Thanks Malc ...but

You can only post picture within the box where you are posting, either uploaded from your computer or a direct link from a host site.

This is the procedure I followed when trying to post a picture:- tell me what I am doing wrong :
1/ Go to art gallery
2/ create post
3/ Message come up you do not have the authorisation to post!

I am able to post pictures in my albums .

If I understand what you are saying I need to create a box ( i.e. post? ) but it's not letting me post in art gallery group! What am I doing wrong?

At one of the classic shows with MB owners club stand today with the SL...one of the members has a W215 CL600, best example I have ever seen...he has had it about 18mths, no major issues other than a major service which required 24 spark plugs:shock: (apparently should have been done at MB s/history)...he uses my local MB indy.

No need to apologise ....... All the quirks of the CL were made clear .... I new it was noisy and had a fault and bid accordingly .... Previous owner was adamant there was no noise! Paid £6000 ( OTT?). But I am going to enjoy putting it right. It is a truly great drive. Thanks all.

we paid £6250 for ours with no service history and a few bodywork issues, we are in it for at least £8800 now in 1 year and I think we may be putting another grand on that next week... my thoughts? I still love it, I'd have another tomorrow and its a supercar with supercar running costs..... Its still the king of kings
