A170/2001/1,7 CDi
Hello,

I need to find out how much transmission fluid needs to be put into A170, 2001, 1.7 CDi - transmission model 423 (5 speed manual).

Long story Short: My car was serviced in MB authorized service, and started to act up. Eventually, after two more visits in MB service, I decided to go to unauthorized, but well known Automatic transmission specialist. His verdict is scary - When MB was changing transmission fluid, they supposedly poured in less oil than is needed. According to the invoice from MB service place, they poured in 3 liters. However he claims that there should be 5,5 liters poured in during the change. This checks out with the sources I was able to find online, but I want to double check with someone more experienced, since I am no mechanic. As a result some of the bearings in the transmission got damaged and approximate cost of repair is 1000 pounds.

Please, can someone advice me, how much oil needs to be put into the transmission when being changed? Thank you

It really depends on whether or not they drained the torque converter.

If not, they only need to put in a lesser amount.

However, it is entirely possible they put in the wrong amount or some leaked out somehow....

My car leaked fluid from the gearbox pilot bushing (basically a plug/socket for the wiring to enter the box) and as the fluid level dropped, I was having issues with the box not changing up upon hard acceleration. I measured the fluid level and found it lacking by 1 litre. I topped it up and away it went.

You can buy a dipstick off ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Auto-Gear...137350?hash=item2a4f6c80c6:g:McoAAOSwuTxV-mV-

But you REALLY need someone who knows what they are doing to use it.

Good luck ;)

Your checks match those of the gearbox specialist you took it to. Job done, Shirley?
