I have been offered a nice 2002 Vito campervan in good shape. The price is tempting enough for me to buy it and play with it.
It has engine/gearbox setup as above. I have not had any experience of this engine or the 4 speed auto box.

What weakness, pitfalls etc if any are there? What should I look for?
And what could I expect where longevity and reliability are concerned?

The vehicle has covered 113k miles.

id imagine that its the OM611 engine and theyre pretty robust units. we had no issues (apart from age related stuff) with our 203 with the same engine. auto boxes really aren't my thing, but id imagine its a similar (or the same) box as fitted to early 202's, 124s etc

It's the 'camping' side of things would concern me...
Sorry...

Yes, it's the OM611 motor, Pete - but that's before my Mercedes ownership time, so I am a dummy when it comes to this engine - and the 4 speed autobox.
Hence the plea for knowledge or personal experience.

Can't comment on the box but the engine was being used for many years.
Robust as 'eck and capable of multi hundreds of thousands of miles, mapped would do it a favour.
Should be easy to carry out Dieselmans EGR delete.
The only real issue is replacing 'o' rings on the fuel lines to prevent air ingress. Might cost you a couple of quids.

Four speed box is purely hydraulic so fluid changes are important. Its a derivative of the box used in the 500SL and S class of the time and is pretty robust as far as I understand.
