Understood. I thought there must be a way of simply attach the reverse camera somewhere, then point the wires towards the satnav unit, job done. Without any other implications (except fitting the wires properly somewhere, like pillars, or underneath the seats, etc).

o_O If you mean WiFi reversing camera, I wouldn't recommend it ... otherwise electrical connections work pretty much exclusively by physical errr connection, or very close proximity for inductive energy transfer.

Just pointing stuff at each other won't work - at least not until you get to protons and electrons level :geek:

ufff, I'll pretend I haven't seen the "protons and electrons level" :D . No, I don't mean wifi reversing camera, but I thought it's something like: putting new satnav unit, connect 2 cables for reversing camera to it, then taking the 2 wires to the back of the car, mount the rev camera and connect those 2 cables, job done.
But if it's more complicated than that, I'll prepare everything, then I'll check again your messages (to make sure if I can do it or not as DIY), and if not, going to an electrician to connect just the rev camera.

Well, it's actually only one wire - an RCA yellow plug lead - and it comes with a [decent] camera - a 6m cable usually.

Plugs into RCA socket on the unit (marked 2 on this diagram):

That's about it. If correctly powered, you can disregard small red trigger wires (if present on the camera lead).

David,
Where I am unsure is if the HU will provide the 12 volt output when canbus sees reverse selected,
I've always picked up the 12 volt from the rear light cluster.
It used to be that a 12 volt was required to the HU from the rear light cluster to signal it to flip to camera screen, but this is no longer as canbus does this.

If the HU does provide the power out to the reverse cam then the kits that have coax that carry 12 volt also it is as easy as one cable from HU to the camera, as adyuaic "job done".

Of course Martin, I didn't even mention the power up part, as you've described that before - and this is exactly, as I have wired my camera (and a few before that) - I thought the unknown bit was the connection between the cam and the unit.

I think I even pointed out that a 12 volt stabiliser might be required, if there's flickering or interference, when the camera is powered from the reversing light ...

so assuming it's plug & play only, where does the wire get through towards the unit?

I refer the right honourable gentlemen to the answers given earlier, in posts 36 & 53 by M80, and in post 52 by yours truly

OK, so I've tried to see if I can do it myself but no, no way. I've connected the big socket to the car one, then a couple of others (like USB, etc) but it doesn't work. So, is there anyone who can help me out? Paid of course

You're probably short of the switched 12 volt feed,
more often picked up from a cig lighter.

In the short term a link between yellow and red at the ISO socket would get you going.
But this will flatten your battery if left like that.

I'm interested in long term installation only. Do you know anyone who can help me out with this?

Sorry I'm a bit far to pop over,
maybe there is some one closer.

What's the solution for the long term then? Should I give you some pics with the installation so far and maybe you can point it out what to do next?

It can be a bit awkward to get to but I would expect a cig lighter below the HU.
If you are able to unplug that there are 2 wires, you need to tap onto the +ve of the 2. This should be switched by the ignition and will trigger the HU into life.

Up at the ISO socket from the HU there is likely to be a good number of wires but you're looking for a heavier duty yellow, this is the 12v +ve feed,
orange for illumination of the HU when lights are on,
heavier duty black, for -ve feed,
and a not so heavy duty red, this is the trigger wire fed from the cig lighter.
The last is a blue wire this is a 12v +ve out to the antenna amp when the unit is on.

You need to confirm that the cig lighter isn't powered all the time, that is it is only powered with the ignition switch turned.
