Hi,

I'm Eric, I'm relatively new to the forum and to Mercedes ownership.

I own a company called SCOTWHEELS (based in Perth and Fife) and have built up an excellent reputation over the last 7 years of trading, specialising in alloy wheel refurbishment and car detailing. I have been doing machine polishing and paint correction in a professional capacity since 2002 and been a qualified spray painter since 2010.

Not sure if there is a traders section or advertising section or indeed the rules regarding this so if an admin could contact me that would be great as we have some amazing special offers on just now.

Also I am always willing to offer advice on anything painting or detailing related.

Many thanks

Eric

Hi Eric
There is a forum sponsorship of sorts, no doubt an admin will see this and comment.
Glad to have you on here, if I was still up there I’d use you!

Hi folks!

Diamond cut wheels are never going to last in our climate unfortunately, lacquer over bare metal isn't really the best of ideas, although it looks nice! Some places now put an ultra thin anti-corrosion layer before the lacquer stages, this in turn gives the cut areas an almost holographic/rainbow effect when in sunlight etc, similar to the colours you see when oil or fuel meets water, apparently it makes them last a tad longer.

I don't actually offer a diamond cutting service, I'd actually feel bad charging a lot of money for something I know won't last. Not the greatest of buisness decisions but it keeps my conscince clear haha. We do lots of diamond cut wheels but get rid of the cut areas completely and coat them properly ie etch, 2 x high build, 2 x base and 2 x clear.

I'm ashamed to admit.......I actually had my own wheels diamond cut (pictures added) by a competitor that I have a good working relationship with and give lots of work, they did the full set for £100 for me!!! Even though I don't belive in them I liked the price and indeed the look too, ha!

I'll actually be interested how long they last, well cared for from new. I've ceramic coated them before they were fitted and obviously wash them very regularly. What I also do is blow out the valves, center caps, bolt holes and lips thoroughly every time its washed, with my air line and blow gun, I actually do this on all the water traps around the body of the car too and indeed, on every car I detail too

Youth has them on his VW but as its not yet three years old methinks a warranty claim is in order, they have the milky lacquer look in places.

Yeah thats water ingress getting in under the lacquer, it can be the tiniest of stone chips that start it as it gets down to bare metal straight away (unlike the other non-cut areas that are protected by primer etc), eventually it will break the lacquer, turn brown and spread round the whole entire diamond cut parts, I have seen some rediculous states that diamond cut wheels have got into. Not sure how many years warrenty they offer on the wheels but its certainly worth a shot. I'v seen them start to go as little as 6 months old.

Hello bromchild welcome. What do you think of rim protectors as a guard against curbing. I’ve heard mixed reviews

I had my diamond-cut rims powder coated in black and clear, and so far it has stood up very well (18 months). I have some kerb rash on one of the wheels, and the water hasn't progressed under the clear powder coat at all since I did it about a month after having the wheels refurbished .

It seems pretty resilient, although the black gloss finish did take on a bit of a haze after it was attacked with acid-based cleaner by a car wash I used to use. It hasn't got worse since. The powder coat does show 'build up' on the detaiis such as the AMG logo, but overall I've been happy with the process's finish and it's durability.

My personal opinion on them is they aren't worth it, you get a build up of fine grit underneath them and over time it will mark the rims as obviously there is tiny amounts of movement and vibration. This in my eyes defeats the purpose of them. People may disagree with me but that's my opinion on them anyway.

Think they’re also liable to trap moisture on diamond cut finishes too therefore causing additional corrosion
