I'm fuming about all the news reports I've heard saying he's had a bad time lately what with being addicted to pain killers because he hurt his leg, and then his wife split up with him.Now his career is put on hold because he's been in an accident while drunk as a mop and the millions he will lose as his shows are cancelled. While not much time has been given to the woman and child he could have killed. What was his mother thinking getting in the car with him.i guess we've all had our bad times and can't use that as an excuse.
No sympathy from me he knows it was illegal and has to accept the consequence.
Rant over

I've got no time for anyone drinking and driving but there are drink drivers getting caught everyday, I don't see his case as any different to anyone else.
Only newsworthy to the extent this weeks show will be cancelled and they're looking for an alternative for the last two shows.

Have you seen the video of him getting out of the car? Why would his mum even get in the car with him in such a state!

And it's a tough s**t from me too, he knew what he was doing so it's down to him. The emphasis should have been on the poor mother and child who have suffered because of his stupidity !! I am appalled

There are millions of people who regard them as Slebs as you call them, for me I find them totally nauseating :(

It is difficult to find sympathy for him, especially the stupidity of driving whilst obviously well over the limit.

But it should be remembered he is a recovering alcoholic, an ill man who has regressed.

I don't understand how anyone could get in that state, to rely on alcohol or drugs to live their lives, but Ant McParlin is an ill man and should only be condemned for driving whilst drunk. If anyone should be lambasted, its his mother for allowing him to drive.

This is what gets me. He's a bloke on the telly.

That means he gets paid a truly astonishing amount.

That means he's famous.

Not like John Craven off Newsround was famous back in the 80s, it means that modern media force him (and all the rest) into our faces, every day, all day.

That makes them famous. Which turns them into "celebrities". A lot of these types (the Kardashians) are famous for... being famous.

Totally agree. My mother was killed by a drink driver when I was 16 years old. I have zero sympathy for anyone who drink drives.

Sorry to hear that, I'll bet there was a small piece in the newspaper at the time.
Ant will be in the news for a long time, the story will be about him and the show.
The media could have used the story to shame all drink drivers but I guess that doesn't sell.

I wouldn't let my kid drive like that, I'd take the keys from them. He looked absolutely wasted and hardly aware of anything that was happening.

Absolutely correct. It made TV news solely because it happened in the early afternoon rush hour on the motorway and caused enormous tailbacks on the Auckland harbour bridge. A day later it was forgotten about.

To add insult to injury in my mother's case the drunk driver was let off on a technicality. He was unconscious at hospital and a blood sample was taken. As it was taken without consent it was inadmissible.

The only bright spot was that he worked in the naval dockyards. Dad had just completed 20 years in the Navy and had left at Lieutenant Commander rank. The drink driver was heard to be boasting about how he'd killed someone when drink driving and got away with it so the Navy took its own action. He was assigned every dirty unpleasant job going and eventually left 2 years later.

That one event had a huge impact on my life - and thats something many people forget. The family of the deceased have to deal with it forever.

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
Anyone vulnerable to drug/alcohol abuse should have a support system in place when things go tits up, the fact his mother was there seems very strange especially as family should be key to a support/prevention regime especially when the public profile is high and a camera lens always pointing at you.

I've have had customers turn up, after being in the pub, to collect their cars,
I refuse to let them have the keys and have had to man handle some of them into a taxi home.

90% thank me when they turn up sober to collect,
the problem is when some ones too drunk to make sensible decisions,
some one else has to make them for them.

Zero tolerance with DD should be applied, that way from the beginning of "I'm only having 1 pint"
means you are not driving at all and if you are seen with car keys on the bar, table or even seen on a car park camera,
refusal of alcohol to the driver should be considered/legally binding to the publican bar staff waiters etc etc.

Perhaps some sort of incentive scheme for the employees to advise the car owners/drivers,
some country pubs I've used offer a local transport service for the regulars in the village community.
Saves those bleary eyes on a wet country lane coming home from a session.
