the roll bar has tilt sensors mounted underneath on the rear control arms. just unbolt one and drive down the road, it should deploy above 20mph or some such low speed. i have tried this before and it made me jump i can tell you!

from reading the info Malcome sent, I think these sensors are only on the pre 96 cars....can anyone confirm as mine is a 96

also, is there a unit mounted in the center under your back seat? is this not the control unit for the roll bar? which roof module do you have. is it the 2x plugs or 3x plugs?

i have the 2 plug version mounted under the drivers side rear seat...again post 95 i believe

continued.......

i bought a replacement unit from a guy who was breaking a 320sl...exactly same part no. as mine

plugged it in and now nothing works.....the red roof button is constantly lit, the roll bar button is constantly lit, rathyer than previously flashing and the orange warning lamp is still lit on the dash...the roof and roll bar doesnt operate at all now.

does the new unit need synching or resetting with the car somehow?

cheers

I think that unit is faulty as there is nothing to re set, it is plug and play

The vehicle I bought it from was rear end accident damaged and the roof pump in the boot was smashed.....Would the ecu not have read a fault and stored it, and thus need clearing????

Thanks Malcome...I'll get there in the end

Interestingly, I was driving the car a little 'aggressivly' last night and the roll bar deployed, which I thought wouldnt happen due to the fault....so apart from the dash light being on, everything seems to work...windows, roof, rollbar...bizaar!!

That is odd that the Roll bar works, it would be cheaper to fit a timer on the lamp warning to shut it off.

I have not made up my mind as to whether I could take a look at your faulty module, I have never done one, but who knows

finally got another replacement unit and this one seems fine...I think

just a couple of questions

1. with the roll bar down the led in the rollbar switch flashes, with the bar up it goes off....is this operation correct?

2. The seat belts reel in and out freely until the are plugged in, then they lock and can not be pulled out, this makes it a bit awkward if you at a junction and want to lean forward as belt wont allow it....is this operation correct?

thanks

there is a slight difference in the part numbers of the part i replaced

my unit is:
129 820 31 26, the replacement unit is
129 820 32 26

are these compatable...is this maybe why the rollbar swich is still flashing?

thanks

Is the recognition switch at fault for the roll bar down ??

Yes the pre tensioners are working, when you get to a junction, just lean back, the they will release to allow you to move forward.

I will try and check on the numbers

The recognition switch could be at fault, is there a way to test this?

with the old ecu (supposedly faulty) fitted, under very hard braking, the bar deployed, with the new ecu it doesnt?

i've tried leaning back at a junction but the pre tensioners just wont release, this is the same for both drivers and passenger belts.

thanks Malcome:D

There is way to test I think but time is limited for the minute

I have forgotten what the 129 belts were like, you should be able to move around in them when you are not braking, if the are locking up completely I will check on their operation

thanks Malcom,

are the belt tensioners controlled by the same unit by chance?
