I was gutted Ves had a penalty - he drove superbly, but as JBell said he was 4 wheels off the track (albeit incredibly briefly) to make the pass.

My view is he cut the corner to do it, he was whinging that people were going off the outside of the track which he was also guilty of.

Cutting a corner is different to going off round the outside as you shorten the track

Going off on the outside still has a benefit as it means you can carry more speed through the corner.

I get that and every driver did it on Turn 1, 19 etc including Max. They need to install Sausage kerbs for next year to stop it all

Agreed, or police the rules more rigidly for all.
Sausage kerbs may create an issue for safety - especially given the way Vettel pushes people off the track at every opportunity.

Tough one for the FIA (even tougher for Ves), as I guess it depends on the circumstances. Being "off the track" and gaining no advantage and causing no danger might rightly be tolerated.

For instance, if one of my employees occasionally turns up 1 minute late for work, I doubt I would be too concerned. However if that same employee turned up 1 minute late for a financially important business meeting, I may take a different view!

Put some good ole Nascar walling around the USA tracks and let them run each other along it.

And a flame thrower .......and throw a steward on the track every now and then .......... and .................

Braun had it right - Max's penalty was technically correct, but its application at that point of the race was stupid, and the rules need to be changed.

Define track limits with continuous kerbs that are self-penalising, cut out all nit-picking rules that frustrate the fans, and let the guys race. Otherwise the sport is heading for self-destruction.
Do the fans really care if five engines are used instead of four? Only if the driver is sent down the grid for such a sin!

I'm going out on a limb here and saying I actually don't object to that rule.
The whole point of it was to reduce the costs for lower order teams and give them some chance of competing. Otherwise the higher budget teams can build very high powered 'race specials' that they throw away after a single event. That would take us to the scenario where engines are blowing up during races, safety car deployments, etc etc. I'd rather see the penalties invoked for excess usage of engines than watch safety car laps as they clean up the oil and fragments from blown engines.

Agreed, also need to stop this free pass of "I have a 20 place grid penalty, might as well make it a 60 place penalty".

At the very least I think that if they are going to enforce these limits, then grid penalties should carry over to the next race - i.e. 20 place penalty, but you can only drop 15 places then you carry over 5 to the next race

The last two posts really just highlight the corner that F1 has boxed itself into.

Many moons ago, racing was just racing. Now there are so many regulations with penalties for infringement, that fans are turning away. Fans obviously hate it when a driver - like Alonso for example - gets shoved down the grid because Honda messed up.

A revamp might include a complete separation between technical infringements, where the team takes a hit, and driver infringements where the driver gets punished.

That way, if a driver has to take on, say, a fifth mgu then he keeps his grid position while the team has points deducted, or some other appropriate hit.

Component failure > not driver attributable < should affect the team constructors points.

I like this idea where the guilty are punished. Whilst making these changes can we also have single points added for pole and fastest race lap.

Rightly so.
Loved his interview after qualy and before the stewards meeting when asked about the upcoming meeting....”smiled and said ‘yes I know the way there’”
Class - what a breath of fresh air he is to the sport!!
