Are all W124 headlights the same?

Are pre and post facelift W124 headlamps all the same?

I assume saloons, coupes, cabrios and estates all share the same headlights?

No they aren't. 1993 was a facelift year so they changed then. Saloons and estates are the same but not sure about the coupe and cab!

saloon/coupe/estate/cab all the same, and as above, pre '93 and post '93 different (althogh the post '93 will fit on the earlier ones.) Also, technically 85-88 had duller reflectors, they were then brightened for the 88-96 version. Also.. the lamp units themselves are all the same, it was only the lense that was changed in 1993 for the facelift.

If I remenber right! - both pre and post facelift headlights were the same size and shape. The main difference was the indicator lens changed from an orange plastic unit to a clear plastic unit but with and orange bulb. Both units looked the same shape.

The indicator units are totally separate and are fully interchangeable pre/post 93. The only difference is the colour.

Rob Parker is correct on all counts.

The face lift lenses have a recess that the bonnet/grille blend into in the glass,so if pre face lift lenses were used on a face lift car the lens would break as soon as bonnet was shut but the other way around works fine.

There's a few types.

Prefacelift Bosch, prefacelift Hella (chrome on inside of lens) and prefacelift 500E lights.

And then their post facelift oppos.

You can mix and match the lenses, but one Hella lens and one Bosch lens look a bit odd.

bonnet / hood swap

I am planning to repaint the front of my multivalve E300 diesel post facelift estate car.
I will be fitting new wings on both sides. I wondered if the pre face lift bonnet will fit on over the newer light units?
I like the wider grill on the older cars and since my bonnet is quite rusty I could change all the panels at once.
Any one done this?

They look a bit odd but do fit, why not fit a facelift bonnet??

As Nick late headlights with early grille look odd due to the lenses being scalloped at the upper inside corners for the later bonnet. The aftermarket clear lenses aren't helping but this pic shows the illustrates...
