So I treated m'self to one of Sanef's motorway tags so that we can waft through the French toll plazas. The instructions are fairly clear that the tag needs to be mounted behind the rear-view mirror on the "mottled" area, since if you have an "athermic" windscreen it will block the toll plaza's transponder from handshaking with the tag.

How the flippin blink can I tell if I have an athermic windscreen?

Athermic screens are those blue tinged screens that are often found on Renaults.

Just stick it on the shaded area.
You can hold it in your hand if you wish and point it at the sensor/camera.

Only slight problem is that the shaded area is occupied by the mirror mount. There ain't no room for anything else.

That’s weird! In my 212 I have the Mersey tunnel fast tag transponder and also the Mersey gateway strips on the shaded area with no issues- is the French one huge?

inch by inch and a half.

There is also an area at the base of the windscreen you can use - it should be in the instructions.

Does your phone work in the car? If so you probably won't have an athermic windscreen.

You could try testing more accurately by putting a bluetooth device the other side of the windscreen then trying to connect to it from inside the car with all the windows shut.

Back of the mirror mount then is the option . Dont fix the bracket if you arent sure yet , get the passenger to hold the tag where you think it will work , then fix the bracket after that test . Say you came up with this idea yourself !!:D

Same with my E350, mine is mounted just below this and works fine.

It’s a leap of faith on first use as you get really close to the barriers before they raise, if using the faster lanes I’m not brave enough to approach them at around 30mph IIRC.

The first time we go back I normally use a standard lane (as opposed to Telepeage) simply in case the tag has stopped working since last time.
The fast lanes are 30kmh not 30mph.

Can you use the tag in the standard lane too?

You have a standard windscreen BTW so it can be placed anywhere really.

I just plonked mine on the drivers side of the rear view mirror ... figure it will work ok ..and if not I’ll pull it out and wave it at it... bit of a bugger to get off though..the fitting is v v tight..

Just a few thoughts.

Are the tags allocated to a vehicle or a person?

How do the fines get to you if you don't pay? ie do they record the vehicle registration, take a pic or wot?

If to a person how do they know it was you at the sensor, or not you?

If to a car then as above they must record the car registration, so job done.

I often wonder if these things are thought through properly.:rolleyes:

Its to a person , so you can lend it to a friend . Its linked to your bank acount as well for an end of month direct debit . Im sure if it was stolen there may be pictures of someone else using it ?

Fines? You don't get charged speeding fines at the peage stations. You just pay the toll fee via direct debit at the end of the month. If it's lost or stolen, you just report it to them same as you would your credit card.

Person. You take out a subscription and get billed for each tag according to their usage.
If to a person how do they know it was you at the sensor, or not you?
Why do they need to know? As long as the tag is valid and all bills paid its not a problem for them. If the tag is stolen you can report it to them and it becomes disabled.

There are no fines (unless you do silly silly silly speeds from point to point at which time the Gendarmes may take an interest....).
If the barrier lifts the tag is valid. If not you don't go though. If the monthly bill isn't paid the tag becomes disabled.

I have 2 tags - one for us and another for friends visiting us. Now most of my friends have their own tags.

pink tinge on the outside like a 1999 renault...IR heat insulating glass...

pikey Pilkington replacement is missing 2 cutouts in IR tint, (one for the transponder and one for secondary location of the sat nav antenna, at the base of screen in the miiddle) the electric screen heating is unreliable with random performance in winter, the glass seems "soft" and its the wrong shape at the bottom so the trim leaves a yawning chasm for dirt and water to get in, plus according to autoglass merc have patent on bonding metal to the lower edge, so fakes have rubbish stuck on with double sided tape that falls off as you try clip back the trim GARBAGE !!!
