Hi All,

Can I top up the oil in the auto box on my c200k w203? The oil light has appeared on the dash and the engine has a slight judder. The car has done 37k and has B service in 4k. The garage mentioned the oil in the auto box may need changing at next service but can I top it up for now. There are now visible leaks very clean in fact. If so how do I do it?

Hi,

The oil light will refer to the engine oil, not the gearbox oil.

The gearbox oil can be checked, but only with the aid of a dipstick which is normally a garage only tool. It can be made with curtain wire however.

The oil light on the dash would be for the engine oil NOT the auto transmission oil. As far as I know there is not warning display for low transmission oil....

37 k miles is the right time to change the fluid, when you say judder, is this under all conditions or just when pulling lightly

I have just got home and will have a look now. The car is now my wife's and thought I'd get a head start before I came home on what the problem could be. As she rang me earlier today with the symptoms. I 've got a Memoscan so I will hook it up shortly.

I shouldn't have tried to get a head start. The light was the engine management light (amber) not oil. The read out on the Memoscan said it had a cylinder 4 misfire. I erased the fault started the car waited for the engine to warm and took it for a drive. Seems fine, will this be a problem? I wondered if the flash floods we had last night made the engine damp?

what age is this car? if it is 2003-on with the black plastic cover over the engine this misfire could be a very bad sign! was the misfire the only fault code?

Yes it's an 03 and the engine cover is black with mercedes benz down the middle. Yes it was the only fault. Sounds like it shouldn't be driven!

The M271 engine has suffered from sticky valves requiring new guides. Get an expert opinion before worrying too much.
