Hi guys,

New to this forum so hope you guys can help.

Ive got a 2006 CLK 280 and having an issue with the automatic gearbox. It doesnt happen often but when it does its a pain!!

The issue is that sometimes the car from stationery wont shift up gears so i cant speed up and tends to rev further as its not shifting up.

To solve the problem i pull over, turn the car off and then back and this seems to solve the problem untill next time it happens again which isnt often but it does happen every and then..

Any suggestions as to what is causing this and how i can fix it? Would it just need a gearbox oil change as im doing alot of short journeys or is it something more?

Thank you in advance

ATF change is always a good thing and recommended at approx 40k mile intervals.

Your symptoms point toward a possible electroplate failure, relatively common and not horrendously expensive. First thing to do is to get the error codes read via STAR.

do you guys recommend that i go to a merc garage and pay the £130 for the diagnostics or to go to a merc specialist and see if they can get me the fault codes through the machine they use?

The nearest merc specialist i know of is osbornes in maidenhead where im based...

A good indy' in your area who is recommended on the forum are Star Motors in Caversham
http://starmotorservices.co.uk/

I would have the codes read before changing the ATF fluid as you could be wasting your time if indeed the speed sensor is failing.
If your gearbox is the 7G version I'm afraid it's a bit expensive (£700+) but it will include fresh ATF.

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciate it..

I rang hm local specialist for mercedes and they said they don't have a STAR machine but have an auto logic machine.. Are these any good for diagnostic or would you only recommend a STAR machine?

I went today to star motors in reading to get a diagnostic done on the star machine for some fault codes. I have to say its a brilliant garage and i would highly recommend.

The fault codes i got regarding the gearbox are as follows:

Electronic transmission control:
2767 - The signal from component Y3/8n2 (internal speed sensor (VGS)) is not available. Status - stored

Would this then point to an electroplate failure? or is something more such as the valve body which i read somewhere?

To be honest the symptoms have only happened around 4/5 times through about 6months but that could be because i do alot of short town driving distances.

Been quoted around £500 for the job

£500 including the plate and new oil? Sounds good.
It could also just be a poor connection to the loom.

Check the pilot bush for ATF leaking into the loom. Not unknown for the ATF to migrate all the way along the loom to the ECU causing connection issues.

The tcu is in the gearbox, screwed to the valvebody and is in oil.
