I am new to the site so if this is a common fault please forgive me.

I have noticed after having the battery changed or disconnected that the electic windows stopped working. That fault seemed to remedy itself each time after a week or so. I cannot recall but around the same time the ABS and BAS warning lights came on and will not go off. They do not illuminate at start up until you take your foot off the brake pedal. The ABS is not working as per the warning light.

I notice in the manual it says that the system will turn itself off if the voltage drops below 10 volts and is supposed to turn itself back on once the voltage comes back over 10 volts.

I wonder if some one has had the same problem and knows an easy fix such as a fuse change or a reset. I cannot find the fuses for the ABS and BAS. The owners manual tells me to go to the dealer, but I am not close to one and the car has been serviced by a non dealer who doesn't know what to do.

The car is a c180 1998 model

When power is interupted, the electric windows will need reprogramming, hence you find they don't work properly. The correct procedure is to wind each window in turn, up, then hold the up button in for around 10 seconds. Then do the same for down. Then they'll be fine.

The ABS/BAS is tricky. There are several possible causes. The thing that normally causes this after a battery change is that the steering wheel angle sensor needs resetting (I am assuming that the ESP warning is on too). The procedure is to turn the wheel from lock to lock a couple of times and the ligts should go out. However if its been like this for a while, I would have thought that it would have reset during normal driving anyway.

The brake light switch is another common one, but this normally brings the light on when you press the pedal, not when you release it, but it is possible. If it is, it's around £8 for the part and 10 mins to fit.

Failing that, you need a diagnostic. Your mechanic should know someone with a compatible diagnostic computer, if not, then to be honest he shouldn't be looking after your car. A merc is not a simple item like a Fiesta. It is full of complex computer technology and needs someone who understands it. Post where you are and someone should be able to recommend a proper Merc specialist in your area. There is no need to go to the dealer - they'll simply charge you a fortune.

Thank you for your help

I am in Australia. I did a google search and your forum was the best bet for a suggestion.

I will try the lock to lock technique and if no joy I will have to travel to a mechanic with the correct equipment.

Again thank you for your help.
