After looking through the forum this seems about the most common thread. We have just got a C220 CDI 2002. Fantastic car but now and then the BAS/ESP fault comes up. Turn the car off and it disapears, sometimes returns sooner sometimes not at all. Is this the infamous brake light switch I have read so much about.

It should be,most are solved with a new switch. £8.75 + vat, held on with a 17mm nut, 2-3 wires to transfer.

NOT HELD ON WITH A 17MM NUT!!
the brake light switch on a c class,e class, s class etc are simply twisted into the bracket whilst holding the locating lugsbetween finger & thumb! if your looking for a 17mm nut you might be there all day lol :)

I've had this problem with my c180.

I replaced the brake light switch but the fault still appears occasionally, although it's only the BAS light now - not the ABS.

The fault light clears if the ignition is switched off and on.

I suspect a wheel sensor, but am not sure.

As Bundy said, on my car the brake light switch twisted off - there was no nut.

Check this thread: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=17347

I was told it was only on sequentronic, but perhaps theirs a wiring loom issue with other C-Classes.

i have a 220cdi c class. The gear lever looks like a conventional auto but you can manually change the gears by pushing the gear lever left or right when in drive. On my BMW this was called Tiptronic

Hi Bondingi,

Sequentronic is a Manual gearbox with a computer operated clutch. Internally, it looks very similar to an Auto-box, ie large brake pedal, accelerator pedal, no clutch pedal. The Gear lever has Auto, +/-, Reverse and Neutral.

You can tell the difference between Sequentronic and Auto by smoothness, Auto is more smooth, but sequentronic is a compromise. It has nearly all the benefits of a manual (other than being able to control the clutch manually) and some of the benefits of Automatic.

went to the Merc dealer and guess what the car doesnt have a brake light switch, they tell me the switch is part of some unit. The fault warning is so intermitent that I guess there is a faulty sensor etc

Hi Bondingi,
No brake light switch eh? Sounds like b*****ks to me...
From the symptoms described - it sounds bang on like a brake light switch to me.
If i was in your position (which i was) - spend a tenner on a new switch and change it yourself. If it is not the switch - you've lost a tenner but got a spare switch, and if it is - sorted.
There are reports on this forum of around £100 bills from a dealer do to this, and it really is simple. By far the most difficult thing is contorting your way to get at the switch
