Hi, I posted this on an existing thread by mistake (senior moment)

After about 40 miles and for no apparent reason the bas/esp light on my R170 SLK 320 came on. The car still drove perfectly and kickdown worked but the cruise control did not function. I have read on the forum that replacing the brake switch is a possible option. Is this still the case even with the cruise control not working.
Needless to say when I turned the engine off and restarted everything inc. the cruise control worked ok and I drove 40 miles home without a problem.

I did have this problem last time I drove the car more than 30 miles or so. The difference then was I did not check the cruise control so do not know if it was exactly the same. After this episode I had the car checked, not on star, but no codes shown.

Any advice greatly appreciated. regards pjtynan

This would fit in with the brake lamps switch, this kills the speed signal when faulty,,only £11

Hi, Malcolm

Is this probable even with the cruise control not working?

Yes that confirms it, the CC must have a speed signal, if the brake lamp switch killed it then no CC.

If the ABS lamp was on as well then another story

Hi, If the problem above was not rectified, are there any potential problems in just running the car without the cruise control until the car is turned off and restarted.
I am hoping to go on holiday in the car shortly and I am curious just in case replacing the brake switch does not cure the problem

Many thanks pjtynan.[/QUOTE]

Hi, Malcolm

As I said the switch seemed all ok but yesterday pm the car would not lock with the remote but would lock with the key. What I found was that the remote now occasionally will not lock the car but if I lock it with the key then the remote starts to function again.
Is this connected to replacing the brake switch or just a coincidence?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

If you only have the one key it is probably the tactile switch coming loose in the key PCB.

This has nothing to do with the other fault

bas/esp light

Hi. Malcolm

Changed the brake switch today, no problem and thanks for the info.

Regards pjtynan

Hi, All

Since I changed the brake light switch as above, the Slk has not been used much save for a trip to Braemar the week that Scotland had it's heatwave and a great trip it was.

The thing is, the bas/esp light still comes on at random times eg: sometimes after 5 miles or maybe 60 miles but never any problems with performance or cruise control and goes out after switching off the engine and restarting.

I have had it plugged into a non star reader and no codes were shown. I would be interested if anybody has any idea what the cause might be as it is irritating me rather than causing a problem.

Thanks in advance

Hi, Malcolm

Thanks for your reply.

What in your opinion do you think the problem might be and is it detrimental to the car? As I said it is only a nuisance to me and if there does not appear to be any serious consequences I will probably live with it.

I am not sure of any good indies in my area of West Yorkshire

The way it behaves I would say a dirty or rusty reluctance ring as the speed signal is not lost

Hi, Malcolm

Thanks for that. I will investigate that first, not sure how long it will be before I get round to it though.
