This Swedish Motormännens Riksförbund, the equivelent of the RAC-AA in the UK put the cars in the following order as to relibility.this is for 2006.

1 MB C class.

Yes - my E has been fairly reliable, but better overall than that epitamy of dull, characterless plastic but reliable rubbish, the Toyota Avensis - I'm struggling to believe it!
I suspect the devil is in the detail somewhere!

Well I'm very pleased to hear that.

I have one of the latest model 'facelifted' C-classes on a 54 plate and have to say I can't fault it yet. I was worried about 'Mercedes quality issues' circulating at the time I bought it but I truly believe Merc have ironed those out in this facelifted model. It's Been fantastic, the interior is much better finish than the pre 2004 C-Classes and it drives lovely and looks the business!

Lets hope we see Merc going up the list (or even topping) the UK car reliabilty polls.

The Swedish motor Club that did this survey refer to breakdowns. the figures have been adjusted to allow for the different volumes of the cars involved.
In the 70's MB out sold almost every other car in Sweden, the V70 took a firm hold in the mid 90's with the start of the 850. by 2001 2 out of 3 cars sold was a V70. MB are now on the way back up again.

This is very interesting. When What car collected data on breakdowns from the UK's largest fleet operators the C class came out best.

And in Germany, where they record all breakdowns (equivalent of AA calls etc) the C class again came out top. So looks as though a Merc rarely breaks down.

But other tests, like how often new ones go in to a dealer for guarantee work are less good. My experience over the years fits this. Odd electrical problems, minor adjustments and so on but no breakdowns. The new 7 speed box gave jerky changes and lots went back for adjustment at the dealers -but not due to a breakdown. Reliability is a complicated multi-dimensional creature.

But good to see more evidence of Merc getting better as we have seen with JD Power .

Hi

Just got to say I have been a Mercedes owner for over 5 years now. First it was an A-Class and for the last year and a half it's been a C-Class.

Despite the odd thing that has needed attention, most notably on the A-class which suffered from several rear suspension issues, the only work i carried out on the cars was regular servicing and renewing parts as needed - tyres, pads, discs etc etc.

What I'm getting at is, despite some issues, not once has a Mercedes broken down or left me stranded at the side of the road. The bonnets are pretty much only opened to top up the washer bottle!!

They have always started first time and in all weathers. Every one of my previous cars broke down at least once or failed to start!!

Thanks to Mercedes my RAC membership has come right down in cost with the RAC no call out discount added each year!!

I like the 164 ;-)

Now that was a car. The old man had a 164E in 1974, one of the last imported before they went boxy. Metallic Blue, Brown leather, deep carpets. In was lovely. Admittedly by 1979, when he started looking for a W123 it was gushing oil from the gearbox and the bodywork was past it's best, it had suffered a broken cam follower 2 weeks after delivery and I remember the garage coming out for a injection system leak at some point - and we condemn an entire make these days if the radio crackles!

I was in the loft the other day and i found my childhood stash of 1970's car brochures, inc the 164 and the NSU RO80! I've even got a full set of 123 brochures and RR ones (shadow, camargue etc) - probably worth something these days!

Big snag with the 164 was that it did not go any quicker than the 144,it just used more petrol.

I borrowed a new RO80, amazing to drive, with that clutch less gear box, the floor was flat in the front, i also note the mb have played with that rotary engine.
