Just make sure that on the label it conforms to 229.1 or 2 or 3. Do use an MB filter they are by far the best

Don't use MB229.1 oil (e.g Castrol Magnatec etc). The handbook specifies at least MB229.3, as this car is designed for extended service intervals. Make sure that it is fully synthetic.

It is probably hard to beat Mobil 1.

As far as I know Magnatec does not meet 229.1.

229.1 is an early fully synthetic grade

Sorry to go on a bit, but I have just been through all this with my own car, and here are my personal findings which may or may not interest you...

Don't be tempted to go for "low ash" 229.31 or 229.51. Stick to .3 or .5 This is because the extra .01 means it doesn't have as good an additive package - it is only there to protect the particulate traps and other advanced emmisions stuff which you don't have.

Being a diesel you can also use 228.3 and 228.5 oils.

It is probably hard to beat Mobil 1.
+1, allthough Mobil Delvac 1 (228.5) is marginally better, and usually cheaper if you can get it. (Being a diesel specific oil means it has a more agressive additive package than M1)

But they are all moving to "low ash" (ESP formula in Mobil marketing speak) and they aren't as good.

The oil companies are having to minimise the specific additives that reduce engine wear - that is the only way they can allow manufacturers to pass the latest emmissions regulations. The irony being that a worn engine is going to have bad emissions anyway, and that wear is going to happen much faster now. Even worse is that soon we will all be using this ESP oil regardless. I've already stocked up on a 5 year supply of "old" Delvac 1 because they have just recently changed it to ESP formula only.

I have read (over on the bitog forum) that some big fleet customers are using 228.5 instead of the specified 228.51 on their latest vehicles because it is cheaper for them stock one oil (228.5) and to replace particulate traps (when they prematurely fail on their latest vehicles) than it is to rebuild prematurely worn engines.

Further anecdotal evidence which may support this is that service intervals have come back down in recent years, after climbing steadily to a peak a few years ago. So something has changed.
