I enjoy driving the other halfs 1997 W202 but the sound system is below the level of my W208 and my W210 It has door speakers but also in the rear are these things That look like they are for speakers I was thinking perhaps a cheap upgrade would be to fit some decent ones here

Or beef up the Door ones Did the C43's have Bose ?
Not after a connoisseurs sound with my hearing just something similar to a standard facelift W210

No reason at all as to why you not install a better speaker, they could make a big difference

Bose was an option on most.

looks like a pair of reasonable quality pioneer alpine / clarions 6.5"s in the front and new install in the shelf ( as theres nowt there at the moment only the pitiful rear door speakers, so the shelf units will be a replacement for the rear door speakers ) should be a straight fit and be a substantial improvement on whats there without breaking the bank after all its only an occasional drive for me but it is annoying when i do drive it

That should work fine, one can never get super results with any speakers in the bottom of the doors. You could add a tweeter higher in the door.

Looks interesting, Its the speaker adaptor rings or collars i'm currently confused about , some of the speakers I am looking at are custom with multiple holes all round them , would i still need a collar / adaptor for those or is it that even those wont fit the mercedes fixing holes without an adaptor?.

As long as the diameter is the same it matters not, but you must be able to fix it.

Those with the holes all round will have a larger cone than those with 4 ears, and the larger the better when used on a door.

Sussed out the Door Fitting setup and it has tweeters in the Top Dash Today Ordered some 17cm Rockford Fosgates ,3 way speaker with W202 adaptor Rings all in an upgrade kit , saw them on Youtube just placed on top of the Dash ,not even fitted ,and the bass was impressive £65 delivered Upgrading the Rear door speakers looks like a loser to start with and will wait to see whether i need rears once the new Fronts are in .
