I have a new C Class Estate and I want to carry bikes.
I have a standard bike carrier bought from Halfords a few years ago that clips onto the rear screen of my wifes Avensis hatchback (I know its a crap)
Any idea if there is a reasonable priced option for the Mercedes?

Thule supply kits to Mercedes so that is the best option although a little on the pricey side, do check to see if you current rack will actually fit on the 205, you may find it's actually compatible.

I was hoping that there is an option to hang them off the back of the Estate.
Not sure I want them on the roof

Look at the Saris Bones range. Well made and strong.
If you have a towbar then towbar mounted carriers are are even better.

thinking about it, I got on to hang off the back from Halfords, they do have a reference book to tell what will fit on a particular car, and I suspect if you use their website it might show all the options available.

Tow-bar mounted ones are by far the best.

Thule do a very good tow-bar mounted 2 or 3 bike carrier.

Go to a tow bar manufacturer/fitter...I had a bracket welded to my tow bar (on another car, not the present one) on to which I could slot two bars to carry up to 5 bikes....£50 in 2000.

I think MaxRaxx does a towbar mount that hinges down out the way so you can open the tailgate too. They aren't cheap mind....

If it was me...I wouldn't have anything attaching to the tail gate.

I have a Thule tow bar 2 bike carrier on my car. It cost £159 and is the basic model. I think the Thule reference number is 9502.

It comes with a light board and has the ability to tilt backwards with the bikes on board when I want to retrieve items from the hatch back/boot.

One word of caution though, the handling of the car is different due to the extra weight outside the wheel base (rear), and may cause oversteer if too adventurous with the accelerator at a bend!

+1 for using a towbar. I have a Thule towbar mounted carrier about £150 from Halfords and much happier putting 3 bikes onto that than I would up on the roof. Have travelled many miles to France and Scotland with 3 bikes on the back and use it every week.
Don't trust myself to lift up high and keeps the dirt off the car.
Not convinced about boot mounted carriers (I've used one a while ago) for anything other than one light bike and short journeys.
Depends how much you intend to use, though.
