Wash it . Clay bar or clay mitt it . Wash it again . Dodo juice lime prime , then poorboys black hole . Coat of wax at the end .
You will get loads of different suggestions and advice , from which you can pick your favourites .
Buy yourself a microfiber wash mitt and a decent microfiber towel to dry off as well. My suggestions won't cost you a great deal and will look good on black .

Good advice from Wighty, but not sure those products are readily available from local stores ?.
If you are going somewhere like Halfords you will find it hard to beat Meguiars or alternatively Autoglym, just my opinion.:)

Go online and find Polished Bliss
They retail all brands including those Wighty endorses
I use Gyeon stuff personally but as said it’s what we each prefer
Polished Bliss keep good stocks and are reasonably priced

An old B-Class.
All good advise. You will get as many opinions (or more) as the number of products that are available on the market, so I will not add to the list.

If you want polish then Auto Glym Ultra Deep Shine is excellent, It is SRP for dark colours as it also has fillers in it reduces the visibility of any scratches then a coat of wax on the top and some Sonax to protect

It is all in the prep IMO:

Wash
Clay
Wash
Scratch remover

Then on with the rest, the AG UDS will clean the paint as well

Should I wash with anything in particular or will washing up liquid do. For the second wash is that just plain water or suds. As for the coat of wax what do you suggest? I am just about to order everything from the bay of E. Thanks John.

Just use a car shampoo for both washes. I tend to use ones without added wax . Nothing fancy will do . Poorboys do a good one called Super suds I think . There is plenty of time for you to "up your game" as you learn and read more . Don't overspend to start with until you find what you like using/ doing as far as cleaning goes .

The car is bound to look better when Ive finished as its been so neglected for years. I can see one door has seen the paint gun at sometime its not the best of jobs its a bit dull and the main reason I thought about cleaning it.I bought an electric polisher years ago it was a good one with multispeed control. I couldn't get on with it and sold it. I have bought another one this last few years to try again and have come to the same conclusion. Its now in the garage gathering dust and me back to cleaning by hand. john

I always use dodo at the end after polishing to give a wet look , I always used a polisher buff with a find compound usually 3 to start to remove old polish and scratch’s then work from there , but need to use loads of water on the paint so you don’t burn it .
Buffing takes about 4 hrs hard work but the black once finished ends up like glass .

Sorry ive not been back guys but to be honest ive not started yet. I bought a pedestrian scissor lift to safely do my house gutters and fall pipes. Its needing quite a bit of attention, what with that and a load of other jobs I still have to start on the car.

Great results for a novice, easy to use and not stupid price I use Built Hamber double speed wax.

That is my choice too !! :):):)
