Hello.

I have a 220E CDI, first registered in Jan 2003. Recently, I had a flat battery through inadvertently leaving the lights on! Anyway, I tried to use the emergency key to open the boot lock manually, so I could access the battery to take to Mercedes for replacement, only to discover that the lock did not work. As I had never had occasion to open the lock manually before, it was a bit of a surprise that in the precise circumstances it was supposed to deal with, it was a complete failure. Thank heavens for the AA who managed to jump start the car to enable me to drive to the dealership.

Mercedes refuse to repair the lock at their cost as they say it is a 7 year old car. Just for info, I spoke to my Merc dealership and followed their advice about using a lubricant in the lock - it doesn't work.

I just wondered if there were any others who had experienced a similar problem to me with the boot lock not working with the key.

Thanks for any info.

And every one should use these blanks before and after the trouble

Try a proper penetrating oil rather than WD-40 - might just make the difference - but as others plenty of wiggling and time will often pay dividends (the keep it properly oiled afterwards).

Do you have full service history? Might be worth pointing out that the lock has seized - but checking/lubrication is a service item - which clearly hasn't been done properly.

I do have a full service history, so judging by what you say the garage didn't do a proper check.

Thanks

I agree with your advice and that regular lubrication of all the lock barrels and the door lock mechanisms (as seen when the door is open) is important.

While checking might be a service item, I doubt if the dealers actually go round lubricating key holes or indeed lubricating the wiper mechanism, if these things don’t work I should think the will simply inform you that you need a replacement, much more profitable for them.

The door hinges the will lubricate alright, that’s because you can see that it was done.

Now a C220 CDI, Have had 4 E180's and a C240S. No longer using the wifes Volvo V70. Not Nice
I recently had the same problem, which I cured using a good squirt of lighter fluid over an hour or two, followed by some 3 in one oil and a lot of jiggling with the key

and note: the above reference to jiggling does not mean turn it as hard as you can with pliers - that will not help.
