I have just replaced the discs and pads on my car. It has been less than 2 years and roughly 20,000 miles. Is this normal or would there be something causing the problem. Most of my driving is in rush hour traffic so it is stop start braking. Both front wheels were replaced last summer and they were balanced at the time. I have had MG's and a Dodge Avenger and replaced the pads on them but never the discs. Is this an issue with Mercedes or just this model. Thanks

Why did you replace them? Did someone say they needed replaced? If so, did they measure the thickness and tell you how much was left on them? Not enough info to answer your question as it is.

Car was in for a squeaking brake. Pads were 75% worn and discs were advised as being worn and they needed to be replaced. Not sure of how much they were worn by.

Let me guess ... you went to an MB Dealer, not an Indie!

MB sales spiel is geared to get you to replace discs when pads are being renewed. A good Indie will eyeball the disc condition and measure the disc thickness before suggesting replacement.

Car was put into local garage that I have been using for years and they have looked after several of my cars with no issues before. No reason not to believe them. Nice to see that my original question has been answered though.

Get your garage to provide thickness measurements. Disc limit is 26.00mm. Without miking the disc up they cannot make that judgement.

To put things in context. My local garage had my business. Well respected, been around 40 years etc. They worked on my cars... I got suspicious when my X Trail started playing up after a £750 fuel sender repair. Then a few months later, after doing a full service on my CL500, they neglected to torque up the rear wheel studs after dropping the rear subframe. One rear wheel separated on the M1 while I had the family in the car, doing 50mph. The other had 5 loose bolts.

So you can understand that just because it's your local garage, that's no specific reason to trust them not to make a quick buck off your back.

With 2 years of mainly stop/start traffic I am sure this will not be unheard of. Most of the wear of discs and pads happens in city driving. The question is when were new discs last fitted? Was it the 20k miles ago or was it before then? General rule is new discs every second pad change.
