Measures are in place and have been developing to make it less attractive (less easy) to 'import' a foreign national for partnership.

In 2002 I was happy in my ignorance and my research showed this to be uncomplicated and inexpensive, but the goal posts were on the move.

Larisa was unable to take any form of employment for 6 months,
within that time we should marry before she could then apply for the permanent leave to remain.
Later after taking the citizenship exam she could apply for citizenship.
She still has a 2nd class form of citizenship that can be revoked.
All of this meant my financial support, and it was expensive. With my evolved understanding I have no issues with this.

If we take the UK population density as 100%, and often it feels like it is, and compare to other EU countries we have France 45%, Germany 87%, Spain 35%, Italy 77%, Greece 32%, and just for interest USA 13%

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...d_dependent_territories_by_population_density

However we do it I see that we are justified in 'controlling' the influx.

There is a great example of where our political representatives failed in the relative population densities of EU nations.

For example... if the UK is 100 then:
Netherlands is 153%
Belgium is 138%
Luxembourg is 77%

Interestingly Luxembourg has an exemption from Schengen due to its small population being easily over run by immigrants.

Our political representatives in the EU could easily have argued the case for immigration restrictions on the basis of population density (which would have gone down very well with the Belgians and the Dutch I would imagine).

Just for interest Australia is 1% and NZ is 6% :)

I've researched a good few other countries, not only for density but serious crime rates, $ GDP per head, cost of living (less easy), average death age (men and women), and even perceived political corruption. Aus and NZ are in the research and very attractive.
You might ask why I have done this.

Further for interest, again UK as 100%, England 154%, Wales 57%, N.I. 49%, Scotland 25%. Of course you might view that the lesser populated areas have greater spaces that aren't feasible to populate. I view this as a great advantage for them as a lower population density for what ever reason means, generally, greater open spaces to enjoy and lower stress levels.

Thats definitely the case for both NZ and Aus.

It really only a 100 mile coastal strip of Australia is really habitable.
NZ has a large chunk of the South Island is just mountains (almost half of it). Thats before you factor in the rainfall. Who'd want to live somewhere with an average annual rainfall of 24 feet (yes feet! - the SW corner of the South Island is not home to much of NZs hydro power for nothing!).

I enjoy mountains, valleys, waterfalls...... I am fortunate to live semi rural, 3 miles from home and I'm sailing on the Errwood reservoir, bliss.
I've enjoyed the Highlands lots, and aside from villages much isn't feasibly habitable, but to know it's there and go into the wilderness that's left is a great stress relief.

The proposals to build on our green belts, as we must apparently, means there is continually less of these stress relieving areas for us to enjoy.
In fact going over to the Errwood is becoming increasingly stressful due to the increasing number of people that also want to escape there. Thoughtlessly abusing the area as they are used to in the city where they cast their McDonald's wrappers at will, park in dumb places and expect the sailing club to be a public convenience.

The financial restrictions are primarily aimed at thwarting Pakistani and Bangladeshi arranged marriages, which they would be better to be open about. I would think language restrictions and bans on marriages to cousins could be just as effective.

We in Britain crave the countryside because our forebears were driven from the land; dispossessed if you like, contrast this with the French who kept their village links and peasant farms but couldn't wait to live in a city. Don't forget what civilised means, from the Latin, it means life in a city. Marx said that craptalism for all its faults freed mankind from the idiocy of rural life:p

No, I like the countryside because it feels like freedom from the rat race. Well it used too, it is being continually diluted.

I would have called it the weekend rat race these days. The Peaks or Lakes on a mid summers fine day is not relaxing by any stretch of the imagination!

It could be that we have 2.5 times the population density of France too... and many French villages have a sizeable proportion of (very long-standing) second or summer/ holidays homes, where the inhabitants work in the cities but commute back for village life at weekends and in the long summer vacances.

One day, week, or month hopefully.

A works colleague had his honeymoon all over Kiwiland. 4 weeks.

Every time I see pics of NZ and the huge range of landscape and climate it has I do wonder why anyone ever leaves it?

You'd have to understand what its like to live there for a few years.

Its a great place. Fantastic scenery, great people (could be biased of course), relaxed way of life. The easiest way to sum it up is what an English girlfriend I had there said to me once... "Can we go somewhere this weekend thats not mountains, beaches or forests?"
NZ is remote. Very remote. Its 3 hours to Australia by 747. Its 11 hours to Tokyo. LA is closer to London than NZ. Singapore is only 90 minutes closer to NZ than London.
If you like mountains, beaches or forests you'll be in heaven. If you want something more.....

The shape of things to come?

Damned paywall....

It says:
Berlin and Rome are backing the European Commission’s plan to rule out starting trade talks with Britain until the UK gives assurances on a multibillion-euro Brexit bill and citizens’ rights.

German and Italian officials say they support Michel Barnier, the chief EU negotiator, in seeking progress on divorce terms as an opening step. France is uncompromising on the estimated €60bn bill, while Spain is more wary of attempts to “punish” Britain.

Such stances are preliminary, since EU member states have still to take a formal position.

But the stance of Berlin and Rome is a blow to British ministers who are banking on Germany taking a softer approach and overruling commission hardliners. David Davis, Brexit minister, is adamant that trade talks will start in parallel with discussions on the terms of Britain’s withdrawal.

Well given that cities are my least favourite places to be NZ sounds ideal.

Working in London for many years put me off cities for life.

But cities also have life, music, art, theatre, sport, cinema, restaurants, pubs, clubs, libraries, museums shops too

The countryside contains all those things.

Without the stench, pollution...

As for life, stand at the top of a mountain you have climbed in the moonlight, and watch the dawn rise. That'll make you feel alive.
