But why would anyone chose to go to Maryport is a mystery... I thought all roads lead out of West Cumbria for a reason... it’s bandit country out there. Cockermouth was the only island in a sea of desolation.
Given why I was going over there, the island in a sea of desolation is aptly named!!!

Good find Steve
To be fair you could write several books on the subject there are some stunning roads still available and unspoiled. I have several personal favourites in Scotland from over the years but Bealach na ba takes the crown for me really

I resonate with the author in the A9, just dreadful nowadays- I have fond memories of doing Linlithgow - Aviemore in an hour in the 840...yikes[/QUOT

Lithgae to aviemore !!!! Naughty !! Once did Edinburgh Waverley car park, the old exit ramp, past the taxis, straight to falkirk high street.
Heavily breathed upon 3 litre Capri, 19 minutes! It was about 4 o’clock on a Sunday morning. Lots of very reckless manoeuvres, m lurd.
I still like the Callander to loch earn and along the north shore road , st Fillans and down past culttibraggen Range to .Dunblane. Lots of nice wee roads around Falkirk and Linlithgow, we used to run 12 car rally’s along them , very technical, not very fast but timed sections were great fun ! Mk 1 and 2 escorts, obviously, sd1 dolly sprint, tr7/8 lada Rivas. Wish I took more photographs when I was doing all these things!

Some years ago I did end of the 30 zone in Glossop to start of the 40 zone in Sheffield in 17 minutes in an Audi S3. Middle of the night, nothing on the road. Most enjoyable.....(for those familiar with the Snake Pass they'll know how quick that was - for those not familiar it's 20 miles of twisty roads with many dips rises).

I remember those runs in our old works van. Something fast and with handling must have been great fun
