Im thinking of buying a 2005 e320 cdi , I have spotted one in a dealer in Edinburgh . It looks a nice car 1 owner full service history , 87000 priced at £8000 . Its a pre facelift with the older straight 6 engine , I'm sure I read these older cars can be problamatic , is this the case ? I have posted a link , what do you guys think ?

Facelift made 2,000 improvements according to MB blurb at the time. Worth seeing if can get facelift in your budget IMO.

Also facelift was one of the most reliable cars in the warranty direct published data. However, I have had the pre-facelift. And it is a fine car. I don't think I have heard it being too problematic or more than any other. Looks a nice well optioned car.

to be honest that is alot of dosh for one, even if it does have 87k on it. I have a 2004 one for sale with 7 seats, in mint condition. and i have had all the troublesome bits done, ie radiator, door locks, torque convertor, heater motor etc, and i only want £6250 and it still has warranty. Considering cars are usually that bit cheaper up there, to me it seems alot

Strong dosh but its not a v6 or 7g. The V6 gives more trouble than the venerable 3.2straight six and IMHO the 7g box is very poor compared to the 5g fitted in terms of shift quality.

This opinion is based on drives and ownership of both gearboxes. Some will choose to argue this but I can only say what I know and have experienced on many Mercedes cars.

Good car that if expensive. Bar rust potentially and SBC that cars bomb proof really

Cheers for the replies guys , I am going to give it some serious thought . I will try and view the car over the weekend , it sounds as if has been well looked after , the bill for the last service came to £800 and all of the old mots are present . Will report back if I get a test drive .

The more I read about the e class the more wary I become . It seems a bit of a minefield lots of potential problems . It has not put me off however , I'm just not sure if I should hold out for a facelift model or go for the straight six .

And avoid a v6 diesel. The 211 from 06 onwards made it to the top ten of britains most reliable used cars. Bulk are 220cdi 5g cars.

The CLS which is 211 based made it to the most unreliable section, and most are v6cdi 7g cars

2004 Merc C220 Cdi Avantgde se Estate
I'm sorry but my last reply was me pressing the wrong button with my dodgy fingers (I suffer with Acute Rheumatoid Arthritis) What I wanted to say is that I bought my 2005 (05 plate) E320 Cdi straight 6 engine estate, just over 18 months ago, I upgraded from a C220 Cdi estate. I only paid £2400 for it, it's immaculate inside and out, drives like new, only 2 owners from new. It goes like a rocket, is super smooth and the road holding is suburb (I ENJOY MY DRIVING) So from my experience the E 320 Cdi is very reliable plus it averages 30 MPH and I don't drive like 'miss daisy' ! The only thing I've done to it was one new tyre, o/s & n/s suspension, oil and filters change. The parts only cost me £165 and I did the work myself at my son-in-laws garage on his ramp, the work was very easy . as it is an easy car to work on, in my opinion ! Although I've been a mechanic for many years.
Kimi.
