C180 1.8 Estate 2011
Hey all.
New to this forum as I hav just bought a Mercedes.
It's a C180 1.8 estate 2011. It's under 3 months warranty.
It drives fine except when leaving the motorway.
It's finr driving but when I leave the mototrway, after driving for approx 45 minutes to an hour, it misfires and has stalled once as I come to a stop. I have no issues on smaller roads so just seems to happen when I'm traveling at 70mph. It only happens after the amount of time I mentioned. I have tested it and didn't missfire after 15 or 30 minutes,
The dealer I bought it from has reset parameters on injection 2 as hey were out & has relaced the NOX sensor. Has not fixed the problem.
Just wondering if any of you have any ideas to what the problem could be. Car is fine except for this issue. It isn't overheating at all.
Thanks
Harry

Hi and welcome,

As it's under warranty I'd just let them sort it. We would just be guessing without data from a Star diagnosis.

It needs a proper STAR system diagnostic, which could be done by either an MB dealership, or at a good Independant Mercedes Specialist.

State in writing to the dealer that their “fix” hasn’t worked, and that without a correct diagnostic and repair, within the warranty period you will reject the car as dangerous. Refuse to drive the car until fixed.
They can come collect and fix it.

Look up your rights - sale of goods act.

Hope it gets sorted

I would be asking to see the bits they removed because as well as a stretched chain, you could have wear on the spockets. At this stage you don't want a patch-up job!

As above, maybe ask for photos if they don't change the sprockets as well ?

Just gone to garage and he says it's not the timing chain. It won't do the same problem now to show the mechanic what the problem is. He said it may be a fuel problem. No idea what that means.
No idea what it is!!!

Just take it to an MB specialist and then have them ring the car dealer once they have found out what it is. It sounds like they have no idea what they are doing. It can't have a "fuel problem" - there is no such thing, its fuel injection, any issues with running or mixture and the ECU would see it.

I'm guessing here, wonder if they've "adjusted" the timing chain to make the problem go away (and you with it) rather than replace the chain

Hi
What is the mileage.
The 3 months warranty offered by the Indys covers abnormal breakdown.
In your car's case, it is down to 'wear and tear'.

How do you mean?

If the chain is stretched it needs to go in the bin. The adjustment is done via the variators and if they can't set the position of the camshafts it will cause all manner of running issues.

I agree with you fuly.

Reading the thread, the OP said he'd had it checked and it was the timing chain. He then took it back to the garage he bought it from and they say it's now no longer the chain that's an issue and it's a fuel related problem of possibly something else...

So I was guessing (and it is only a guess) that the garage has made some adjustment to the chain to temporarily fix it so the OP goes away. I could be wrong but your advice of a timing chain problem and the long history of chain issues on the M271 points towards it being the timing chain. Which isn't going to be a cheap fix for the garage (or the OP if he gets stuck with it).

2 MB specialists have said that it isn't the timing chaina and nothing has been done to it.
And now it's running fine.
I'm not sure what it was.
And whats the M271? No idea what you're talking about.
