Hi,

I will be buying a C200 or C220 CDI within the next week. One bit of info I'm struggling to find is the fuel tank size of these cars and it would also be useful to know how many miles I could expect to get from a full tank of fuel, driving 80% motorway.

In particular I've narrowed it down to a 2008 C220 CDI sport and a 2010 C200 CDI sport blueefficiency (both auto).

Does the blueefficieny make much real world difference? The technical figures say it gives 5mpg better economy which is making me lean more towards that one.

Thanks

C220 saloon on an 08 should give you 40+ overall and on a long run 50+mpg

blue efficiency slightly better. I ran my C220 cdi 57 plate at the same time my brother ran his C220 59 plate blue efficiency. He got 5 to 7 mpg better than on average.

however I would not suggest a C200 versus a C220 as the 200 are slightly detuned

C220 is fine. good mixture of performance and economy

would suggest you try for a later plate C220 rather than a C200 if you can find the extra cash.

However agree with Steve the early W204 C220 with the 5g box auto and pre blue eff engines are bulletproof. I have run mine from 13,000 miles to 75,000 without missing a heartbeat. The Blue Eff did suffer early injector issues although majority sorted now.

tank range is very good for 80% motorway

Thanks guys.

It sounds like the 220 is the one to go for. I have test driven the 220 but not the 200, might try it though to see the difference.

I commute about 480 miles a week, if the 220 can do that from a full tank without requiring a re-fill that would be great. It's mostly motorway but there is sometimes a bit of start-stopping required in heavy traffic.

Oh, another question, all my previous cars have been bought privately, what are MB dealerships like in terms of haggling down price? The salesman I spoke to said he couldn't lower the price at all. Should I try harder? :)

The end of the month is the best time to haggle,,, some cars are outed to clear the way, some you can haggle with.

I have the C200 and mine easily does 500 miles to a tank if I sit at 70mph on the motorway. it normall sits at around 2500rmp at 70.

I have driven the C220 and couldn't really see much difference to be honest. they both drove the same.

It does not cost much to have the 200 upgraded to the 220, many have done this.

.

That's high rpm. Mine does around 1600 -1700 at 70. This is from memory, so not exact.

I've got a C220 Blue efficiency. Just had the injectors updated at the last service.
We've just done our regular run to Portugal. Filling up in Birmingham our next refuel was in Poitier. That's a range of about 650 miles travelling at 70 to 80mph. I think the refuel from showing the fuel warning light was about 55 litres but I can't lay my hands on the receipt.
With the new injectors 50 mpg is easily achievable at those speeds. I'm very pleased with this performance.
Around town mpg could be better but luckily we don't do much town work.

I don't think so (my opinion only). normally when driving a petrol car, when at 70, it used to be around 3000rpm or just above. 2500rmp on a diesel is good.

idea of cost and what's involved?

I believe that Colin from MBS paid about £200, the fuel economy did not change but the performance did.

I think that if one drove the chipped car at the same speed including acceleration, then the economy would be improved, on the practical side you cannot drive thinking about not pressing the accelerator to hard.

The 200 and the 220 are really the only 2 cars in the range that share the same gearbox torque converter, so chipping can do no harm.

Hi Break,

I don't know where your located but if your anywhere near Manchester or Macclesfield I have both a C200 CDI Estate (2009) and a C220 CDI Saloon (2008) and you're welcome to try driving both to see what you prefer?

I also remapped one of my friends C200 CDI Saloons for him recently if you want to try a car that's been mapped.

I'm not trying to sell you anything I just know how short a lot of main dealer demonstrations are. Alternatively if you are local to me I'm very close to the guys at Mercedes Macclesfield and I'm sure they would organise a 24 hour demo of their demonstrator cars for you.

If not good luck, the long and short of it is whichever one you get your gonna love it :) C220 for me is as economical in the real world as the C200 as you have to drive the 200 that bit harder (even just slogging up and down a motorway) which reduces mpg but there's not going to be much between them. It's also possible to remap either purely for economy purposes without increasing or reducing the performance much.

Good luck and that's a great dilemma to have :)

Saloons may well have longer final drives. The shorter gearing would suit an estate which might be more likely to be fully Laiden and or towing

They do not, the 203.0 have the same diff as the 203.2

Thanks again for the info guys and 'bad arrows' for offering a test drive. I live in central Scotland so a bit too far ;)

I tried the C200 today and wasn't impressed, I could feel the difference - the C220 felt much better. The C220 also has lower mileage and was cheaper so I bought it :D

I pick it up in a weeks time, can't wait!

BTW, does anyone ever make use of the tiptronic paddles or is that just a useless gimmick?
