Hi, I have a C220 CDI auto '51' reg, the car drives well but seems slow off the mark. It will not rev over 3000rpm. On hills, on the dual carriagway I drive daily it struggles to maintain speed. There has NOT been any warning lights
It will cruise all day long at 80mph and return 58mpg according to the computer. The type of driving I do, 30 miles each way to work and back, mainly dual carriageway it does not really bother me, but I would like to get to the bottom of the fault
I have just carried out a B service, replacing oil filter, fuel filter and air filter, also replaced the air mass sensor, but came home tonight and was still the same
Any suggestions would be greatly received

Regards

Would you say it feels like the turbo is not kicking in?
It could be the MAF
or the inlet port shutoff motor

The way it drives I would say it feels like the turbo is not working, it drives really well in all other senses, it pulls clean through the gears but just slowly, and just wont rev over 3000rpm

With you changing the MAF I would check the action of the port motor.
If you search on the forum you will find info but it is basically attached to the inlet manifold by a couple of linking arms. These come apart stopping the flaps in the inlet opening

The engine is in limp mode and requires a STAR diagnosis test to see what fault codes are stored,. STAR can also read data from engine management to see what sensors are doing what thus tracing the problem.

Hi
My friend had exacly that same problem in his volkswagen passat 1.9 tdi. Code reader indicated egr valve malfunction. After he cleaned it up there was slight improvement but problem still not sorted. We had a lot of think what could cause it from MAF to CAT but all sense pointed on turbo.finnaly we worked out it's (I don't know right term for it)some kind of valve on turbo which opens to let the air inside when u accelerate. In his scenario it was stuck in half way so every time he tried to rev above 3k rpm car was getting in limp mode. It's risky job so he let car to garage.mechanic opened turbo and cleaned all dirt which was there and then valve was opening and closing correctly.it can be checked manually.
I know it isn't cdi engine but maybe worth to check it out?it could be the answer

Sorry to butt in, I'm suffering exactly the same, with excessive smoke under load, going up mile long & quite steep hills. AA man disconnected egr valve, but made no diffrence. I also have no lights, but it will reset & opperate normally untill you hit the turbo zone. Any idea's

Could be one of many things, as the advice above, get some fault codes read, give us a idea on whats going on........

Disconnecting things doesnt really prove anything. First of you need a STAR diagnosis test to look to see if there is any fault codes stored and then look at some live data to see if certain sensors/components are doing their job.

Might try and get down for a day for a bit, doing quite a bit of support in motorsport this year so busy most weekends but if nothing clashes then I will be there!

Merc c220cdi

Hello guys. I have the same problem and wonder if some one give advice.I have Merc c 220 CDI, 05 Reg 87000 miles. The car recently started to lose power when engine rev near 3000. It does not go beyond it regardless how much accelerator is pressed. Surprisingly it got its power its power back on its own on two occasion. I have checked it from Halford and they cleaned egr valve after diagnosis. It's got power back but losing it again after 200 mile. Then I took it to mercedes and they updated the software after diagnosing and declaring the only problem with car about software. It cover 600 miles without any problem and recently has gone back to limp mode. The engine speed meter does not go beyond 3000. Another unusual findings this time is that engine management light is not turn on which has always come along with problem. On someone's advice I got the battery lead off for few seconds and then reconnected. The power is back. Is there problem with turbo?. Your views will be highly appreciated.

My 03 c220 cdi with 200000 miles on the clock is giving good mileage and drives great but is sluggish and wont rev past the 3000 rpm .I had a diagnostic test done but no fault codes come up .There is no excessive smoke .There is also no warning lights on dash except for a 1 Malfunction light that has appeared only a few times but not always .Where should I start looking for faults please .
