C32 alternator question

Hello all,

About 6 months ago I suffered a pulley collapse on the auxiliary belt which you helpful people helped with.
The car has since been repaired, but has been suffering with a rattle since.

I have managed to locate the rattle, it is the aux belt tensioner moving, today I replaced the tensioner but the rattle is still there.

I checked the tensioner and it is still chattering away.

I have had a quick google of the issue and the general consensus is alternator pulley.

I have read that the pulley only engages in one direction like a bikes rear wheel. I have removed the belt and turned the pulley in both directions, there is no difference in the feel of it.

If you can shed any light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

I thought the one way pulley bearing was only for diesels?
Guess i will find out from this thread soon enough .. but when its goosed it certainly makes lots of noise.

Everywhere that I have looked hasn't mentioned whether the one way pulley is for petrol or diesel, so I never thought about it.

Just had a look on a couple of parts websites, and it states that it is a clutch or decoupler pulley

Also I forgot to mention I checked the water pump, air con pump and power steering pump pulleys and all seam to move freely.

Has anyone any other ideas?

I presume you've checked the alternator bearings?
It was mainly those that caused all the noise on mine...

Yep, checked the alternator, its turning silently.
The noise is definitely coming from the tensioner, I have put my hand on it and goes slightly quieter

I am trying to work out what is pulling on the belt to make the tensioner rattle.
I have had a look at some more alternators for my car and it looks like a normal pulley to me.

I am sure not if the alternator doesn't need replacing anyway, I have a voltage display on my stereo, although I don't trust it completely the voltage is does seem to be getting lower and lower on it.
The last time I looked it was 13.7v, I know that is on the low side of acceptable

Check every groove in every pulley for any dirt. Any dirt needs to be scraped out. It's not uncommon for old belts to leave bits of rubber in the grooves and the variation in diameter where the dirt is is all you need to create the tensioner noise.

it will have to wait until the weekend, but I will give it a try.
