Jesus H....!!
What a dramatic thread here
It’s an hour from Leicester to Birmingham...my advice if you’re really interested in the car is to negotiate with this garage to get the car to Acid at MSL for a full inspection then make your decision based on that, he’ll also be able to access online service history for you. Just my twopence

Exactly John. Thousands of C63's and others with the M156 running around trouble free.

This thread has turned in another project fear.

OP, get an inspection at MSL but as far as I know, the only indication of failing head bolts is loss of coolant which needs to be checked immediately.

Oh,and Sub, your estimate of £25k for a replacement engine! You can buy the whole car for that. Talk about trying to put a guy off.

If you still dont think its an issue, read some of the stuff on the US Websites.
Eg Guy pays $70,000 for a low milege 4 year old. It goes bad and is told its $40,000 to fix, complains to MB who tells him to f*ck off!
Worse still MB US lie and say no known issue, a sympathetic mechanic gives him a tech doc explaining the problem dated before his car was shipped!
Still no joy. :(:(

Are you as pessimistic as this in real life?
FFS, you find something negative and turn it into an everyday occurance.

Rubbish
Just providing that chap with the facts I was given by an engineer who has forgotten more than you will ever know.

I don't accept that.
You are the most negative member on either UK forum Sub.
Always a problem. always turning a drama into a crisis and finding fault where there is none.
Did you get a new battery under warranty you insisted was faulty?

As its been on my wishlist for a long time, I have read plenty on the M156 engine, including its known faults and gave my opinion which is almost directly opposite to yours. You quoted some ridiculous figures for changing the head bolts along with an equally daft figure to buy another used engine. Well done, you put the OP off the car he was looking at.

That’s a real pity- can’t you trade your current car though ?

Used to have a C63...
Don't be put off OP, they are great cars, and the engine is worth it alone!

Many cars that fell in to the time-frame for head-bolt issue, may well have been fixed with the update, and should be documented as such.

Other option... my preferred one... is find a car with the Performance Pack (power hike)! On 2012 MY facelift cars (and I think this applies to pre-facelift too), the engine internals were changed and removed the root cause of the issue (basically has SLS internals).

A facelift car is a better option for other reasons too, if you can stretch a little bit further.

Hope that helps.

What is your current car

1 of 25 RHD 2007 sti limited's. which is the issue, there are zero for sale and no history of any being sold so the dealers have no idea what to price it as, they are basicly offering the price of a standard sti.

Scoobynet is the biggest forum UK side and theres only a handfull of threds even mentioning them,

https://www.scoobynet.com/car-care-380/874113-impreza-sti-limited-pic-heavy.html

thats not my car, but same model. they only came in black silver and white

I know that one, yes a very rare beast but shouldn't put off a specialist if you can find a performance dealer that is actually knowledgeable and has a 63 for sale

May be worth giving RS Direct Car sales in Yate (Bristol) a call... They seem to be clued up on performance metal.

PS. I had a Spec D when they came out - fantastic car! Ended up selling it back to dealer 2 yrs later - he had no confidence in the new hatchback, so wanted any decent saloons he could get!

Subs figures are correct for MB dealer prices - quite why people take issue with a forum member highlighting a potential issue I don't know. It's not being negative, better the Op be forewarned than be ignorant of the issue. People come on here asking about potential problems with 230 sl's and get a list of what faults occur. They don't get slated.

I think you confuse negativity with caution.
As to the costs ... to repair ... just relaying what I was told .. as the OP said if he bought the car and found this problem he wouldnt have an additional £7K to repair it.

And the reason he passed the car up is ... “Well looks like its not happening, not getting the offers i want for my current car. shame really :(
So please get your facts right.

plan would have been to just get the headstuds done. prices seem to be aorund £1500 ish which i could budget for. but imo you don't spend 20k on a car and expect to have to pay another 7k in short order. assuming thats worst case of course.
