Actually I have two questions relating to oil:
Is 1 litre per 4000 miles within acceptable limits?
What temperature should oil be running at? Mine varies, when warmed up, between 95c and 105c in traffic whilst the coolant is fairly stable.

I have noticed that after running for around 20 minutes the water and oil temps drop quite a lot and then climb back up, is that normal?

Ah! That was three questions.

1 litre in 4k miles is nothing to worry about.
Oil temps seem fine. The coolant system has a thermostat so is regulated. The oil doesn't so can vary around a bit.
No idea why it would dip and rise.

could the oil cooler have a stat?

some cars do, another idea, which is kind of rev dependent (if I remember correctly) on a jag v12 only oil going past the relief valve goes through the oil cooler,

Seems perfectly acceptable to me as well, 1 Litre/1,000 miles is classed as acceptable by Mercedes on the M156 engine.

If anything I'd say that the oil temps are slightly on the cool side so you may need to try a bit harder. :D

Very rude of me to pose a question and then disappear, sorry.

Thanks for your messages of support, I was not too worried but I though it best to ask. I am intrigued about a thermostat for the oil system though, does it have one?

Daveenty: I would like to try harder, to get the temp up, but the roads are too busy and today on the one section where I can give it the beans there was a BMW X5 with blue lights on the roof in front of me the whole way!

Yes it would appear it does:

That said from the clip it suggests it doesn't operate till a higher temperature than you're seeing.

95-105 is the same as my 63, nothing to worry about.
