Just a thought I have seen and heard many cars with superchargers whine, is there anyway of getting my supercharger to whine, I thought maybe an Induction kit or maybe drilling the air box?

Please let me know if I am barking up the wrong tree.

I own a C230 Kompressor,

Many thanks.

Matt.

All i can think off is getting an overdrive pulley for it, the happy byproduct being more power

I might have to do a bit of research and see what I can find, I have seen some 230 Kompressors on You Tube and they sound amazing.

Cheers mate.

The only time iv'e known a turbocharger to whine is when the bearings are on the way out. I always thought that Mercedes had Compressors (turbochargers driven by exhaust gasses) annd not superchargers (mechanically driven by the engine). I'm sure that if i'm wrong more experienced members will put me right.

They are superchargers which is why they're called Kompressers.

Hi Matt

My supercharger will produce a distinctive note for, perhaps, 20 to 30 seconds after the engine starts but is otherwise very quiet unless pressing on. The sound is never obtrusive at normal road speeds and most of the time I am unaware of it. It makes a sound reminiscent of a vacuum cleaner but I wouldn't describe it as a 'whine'. Turbos can 'whine'.

A supercharger will tend to 'clatter' when it begins to fail. Mercedes use the 'twin-screw' or Lysholm supercharger design and when the bearings wear the screws can come into contact with one another, hence the clatter.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'is there anyway of getting my supercharger to whine?' because it sounds as though you are considering tinkering around with the supercharger or its induction path. If you do, you'll likely lose power or even wreck your engine. Drilling the air box, possibly bypassing the filter, will likely allow particulate material to enter the supercharger chamber and because the screws and the enclosing pressure chamber are machined to very fine tolerances, these particles will likely score the screws/chamber and reduce its efficiency. The screws' bearings could be damaged and the characteristic 'clatter' may result. So its 'phizz', 'clatter' and 'bang' and a possibly a wrecked engine. No 'whine' at all. It could be an expensive mistake if all you really wanted to achieve was a different, ego-boosting whining sound. Yes, you are barking up the wrong tree.

A turbocharger and supercharger have the same objective but tackle the problem in different ways. Turbos are exhaust-driven, never belt-driven like a supercharger, aka compressor, kompressor.

REGARDS

Phil

Why not tape a lolly pop stick to the pulley like we used to do to the spokes of our push bikes when kids and the faster you go more noise is created ........... good eh?

Why make a smooth quite engine whine, is it not defeating the object, get a scoobydo and fit a dump valve is my answer.

Hey Matt. Following on from senior member Andy WR's suggestion why not use a heavy duty car amplifier with two external speakers hidden under the front guards. You could then record your most favourite whine (probably Subaru WRX or Kenworth Diesel turbo), Hey Hey you could have a whole heap of recorded whines even one from a harrier jet. You would then flick on your prerecorded whine on your Mp3 player every time you blasted off from the lights to show those local lads a thing or two.
Just be careful not to try it in front of the coppers as they might book you for impersonating a turbo car and put your car off the road cos its not roadwothy.Worse still they might impound your car under the hOOn legislation (if it applies in your jurisdiction like it does here) . Worse again you might get charged with fraud.

Regards Aussie Nick ..........Hey Fair crack of the whip mate I am serious.

Ha,ha,ha that has made my day Aussie Nick, just imagine the recorded sound of a jet fighter taking off from the traffic lights, pure class, and been charged with fraud, that is even better.

I reckon Matt is after the whine you hear on the soundtrack of an SLR. Blown Bentleys used to do it too, as does a supercharged Hayabusa a friend of mine runs.

Listen to the noise at 2:05, and I think you might understand what Matt wants.

Seems he will have to throw out the 4 pot asthmatic lump, and shoe horn in a 5.5l V8.

;o)

How about strapping an Acme Thunderer to the grill (mouth bit pointing forward) The faster you go - the louder the whistle.

That should do it.

You could alway get yourself a Brummie mate....
You'll enjoy a constant whining from the passenger seat, even after you switch off.

Oops, did I really say that???
No offence...
