Hi,

I have a 2009 facelift SL500 no faults drives perfectly but i switched on the speed limiter the other day and now cannot engage cruise control. Pressing the stalk and releasing does not switch to cruise and the stalk light stays on. If i press and hold and lift the cruise control comes on but as soon as I release the stalk the limiter lights comes back on and cruise disengages.

Any ideas would be greatly welcomed.

Are you pressing it far enough for the latch to operate?
It's like a clicky pen. When you push the stalk it settles at the inner or outer position, one is around 3mm further in than the other.
My guess is you're only pushing enough to put the light out, so when you release, it doesn't latch and so reverts to the outer position.

I was pressing quite firmly, but will give it another go. It feels more like a push switch rather than a latched switch though.

Certainly on mine (W203). Definitely feels like a 'latched' switch.

Not sure if disconnecting the Battery would re-set the switch, but may be worth a try? Although, as perhaps others may advise, such could lead to 'other' problems.

Definitely a latch switch. Try pushing the stalk away for cruise disengage and hold for 10 secs, that can clear it. If not then it's possible you have a stalk issue itself.

Did you solve this Zac?
On my S203 the speed limiter gets "lost" instantaneously if press the lever again.

Hi,

Many thanks to John for the tip on pressing the stalk forwards for 10 seconds managed to disengage the limiter, luckily it defaults to cruise, but when pressing the stalk again limiter stays stuck on.

Only bought the old girl a week ago so still delving into the niggles. After going through the engineering menus today seems the firmware hasn't been touched since it left the dealer - so looking for a good Merc specialist in the Chepstow Wales area that has a Star system and more importantly a subscription... Any recommendations?

Also weird stuff with the lights - they seem to sort of switch to manual and fog but never go out.

Hoping a full firmware update will resolve some of the bugs.

Thanks guys.

EDIT: btw. the cruise/limiter switch is definitely a push button not a latched button.

I don't know about the SL500 but I would expect the lighting options to be in the user settings. If you have an owners handbook it's reasonably well described. Here's a link to the USA manual (download allowed). The lights should switch over to the side and foglights when you switch off the ignition - that's the "welcome home/visibility" feature.

https://www.mbusa.com/vcm/MB/DigitalAssets/pdfmb/ownersmanual/2005_sl500_sl600_sl5565amg.pdf

On my S203 for example I can set the headlamps to "on" and with the lever in the dipped position they come on and stay on with the ignition. It can be reset at any time. There are other things available or not depending on what your model offers manual control over - I couldn't find an option to automatically close my mirrors when I locked the car on the key fob button - my local indy configured it through Star.
