Nope, it’s for front seats at least in the manuals for my three. Specifically, only MB child seats can be used in the front. There is no PAB cutoff switch as per VAG cars.

People are confused about this. You only ever turn off the passenger airbag when fitting a rear-facing baby carrier in the front passenger seat. You never switch it off in front of a forward facing passenger.

I would also turn it off if a child were carried and didn't have a booster seat (technically illegal but in an emergency quite possible). When the bag fires it will fire too high and push the head back without pushing the body back - nett result broken neck.

Personally I'd never put a child of any age in the front if I could avoid it.

Like wise ..... but we're talking the legality of a forward facing seat in the front with an active airbag. ;)

Even before I posted my plan was to make two separate journeys. In the past they have asked my mother in law for a lift and she was none the wiser. I've since told her that this is illegal and dangerous, even if only a short drive. This is the way it is if you choose to have a family of five!!

I also believe that the driver is responsible for all passengers under 14 years old.

Isn't the driver responsible for all passengers, so if someone is not wearing a belt the driver is fined?

Adult passengers are responsible for their own seat-belts, although as far as the law is concerned they become responsible for their own seat-belts at 14

Passengers up to 14 years old are the drivers responsibility and over 14 years are the front seat passengers responsibility

Up to £500 fine, although because there are so few traffic police I would say you'd have to unbelievably unlucky to get pulled over and fined for it. (I'm in no way condoning not wearing seat-belts or advising of 4 children or adults in the back of a car designed for 3)

Cant you just throw one of them in the boot , that way everyone in the car gets a seatbelt and the boot passenger will probably be safer in the event of an accident unless you are rear ended.

...

Or get a 7 seater estate like our 210 :)

I saw a programme years ago showing the effects on rear facing passengers in the back of an estate. The car was shunted, the dummy kids were catapulted forwards ie to the back of the car, just as the car behind came in for another go by which time the dummy kids were in the ideal position to be squashed.
This was a US 'stationwagon' & being years ago the kids might not have been belted in .... but the video stuck in my mind.

In the 90's our friends parents drove an estate Volvo 245, we had four in the back seat and three in the boot, thought nothing of it!!!!

Mmm? Not sure whether I agree .... if you were sat in the 3rd row seats of my car I've no idea whether you're wearing it or not if I'm driving.

Had 6 of us in a Ford Capri ( https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-reviews/used-car-review-ford-capri-1989-1994-13214 ) going to an AC/DC tribute gig in South Perth one night. Got stopped by plod as exited the Kwinana freeway. It was unusual to have electric windows in cars, so as the plod walked up, dropped the window and 4 smily faces greeted him with 'hello officer, what appears to be the problem?' in my best accent. He asked when I was going home. Tuesday. But didn't say which Tuesday, but did sign orf with see you next Tuesday!!

Another time had 10 up in a brand new Talbot Alpine. On a dirt road in the pyrenees doing a short hop. At one point someone catapulted into the built in stereo and knackered it so we could only play one cassette tape for the next 3 weeks. One side had Hotel California, the other Breakfast in America.

8 of us stood up through the full length webasto sunroof of a Citroen DS driving up and down Marlow High street one night after work.

Happy carefree days!!! :D:D
