Had a bit of a problem with my (now sold but missed) CL500 V8 sludging up on short runs to work and back, less than 10 miles round trip.
Had to clean the 'mayonnaise' from under the cap every week or so.
Bought a £3 replacement cap off ebay, drilled a small airhole in the top to allow the engine to breathe and no more sludging - just make sure to clean the shavings out of the cap after drilling!
Worked on my CLK 320 too.

2005 CL500.
Interesting. I've not looked recently.

Isn't this what the engine breathers are supposed to do anyway?

Yep,

But on these old motors they get sludged up and the engines are pretty much sealed anyway, guess it's an eco-enviro-emissions thing - pays to let 'em breathe a little.

A good run normally clears it, i.e. 100 miles plus but if you're only using it for short journeys it pays to check under the cap regularly - similar symptoms to head gasket failure!
