Hi Folks , I am changing the front discs and pads on my Clk tomorrow , I am using MB discs and pads . Looking at the new discs , they have a greyish coating on them to stop them rusting I presume , what is the easiest way to remove this , my plan was scrubbing with wire wool/brake cleaner .
Or does it even need removing ??

That is true for the oil coated discs. The MB and some other manufacturers discs have an anti rust paint that can be left on the disc.

Well , it was a long old day changing the front pads and discs on the Clk . Probably took 4 hours all in , I lost half hour at the start not using a big enough hammer to get the rusted disc off the hub , and then an hour cleaning the rusted hub with wire brush and sandpaper . The second disc took no time at all , used a bigger club hammer so only took a few mins to get the disc off the hub , and then used an angle grinder with a wire attachment that took a couple of mins to properly clean the hub .
I messed up with the MB pads first off , didn't notice that two of them had direction arrows on them , so fitted them both on the same side , with one facing the wrong way , only took about 10 mins to get them out and I then put one of them on either side of the car ( only 2 pads had direction arrows on ) . I left the anti rust paint on the discs as advised and it comes off easily when the brake pads operate .
Now I'm lying flat on the couch with a stiff back ...kicking the living daylights out of an Easter egg .
