Hello fellow members.
I have a 55 reg 270clk 270cdi which has been stood for couple of weeks & I went to start it last Thursday & it only just started, I went to it today & it turned over but very slowly then it died so we jumped it off a pick up whilst I put the jump leads on the pick up my friend connected the jump leads to the Merc but unbeknown to me he had connected the jump leads directly to the battery & not to the red positive terminal on the top of the strut & when the car started up I noticed that there were no temp/fuel gauges, no speedo, no rev counter in fact nothing on the dash was working. Could putting the jump leads directly onto the battery maybe caused an electrical problem?

Sorry to hear that. Although I know many will say it's ok I won't use jump leads or booster packs on any of my cars, they are packed with so much delicate electronic equipment now it's just not worth taking a chance.
Good luck.

When the car started, did you remove the jump leads?
That is the point most likely to cause damage (apart from connecting them the wrong way around).
NEVER remove jump leads whilst the car is running!

Also make sure headlights are on to reduce the possibility of spikes.

For future info and for anyone reading this thread that might use leads at some time to jump start their car.

Never trust anyone to connect or disconnect jump leads to your car, very few people know how to do it properly and as Taffy, it's more important than ever to do it the right way, or not at all if possible.
