I’m looking to buy a 2007 clk 280 sport convertible with 97,000 miles on the clock.I know they had issues with the balance shaft but to my understanding got rectified by 2007.i managed to get the vin number WDB 2094542T092345 can somebody work there magic and tell me if this is the better updated engine and what other things I should look out for? It’s such a lovely car.

Not sure about the engine but I would want to be absolutely certain that the mileage is correct, have you run the number through the GOV.UK MOT history checker ?

Hi Micheal if you have an Android phone there is an app "MB VIN Decoder" free to download and will give you the build sheet of your car.

If your engine number is 272940 30 748945 as I found on http://mb-teilekatalog.info/view_DatacardAction.php?lang=E&vin=WDB+2094542T092345
Then it falls in the second category below;

engines up to #2729..30 468933 -- this when the gear is the problem

engines up to #2729..30 759427 -- this when the adjustment solenoids are the problem

engines up to #2729..30 895140 -- this when the adjustment solenoids leak oil

The first two scenarios cause "check engine light", the third is just an oil leak.

The first is expensive to put right, the latter two not so much.

Thankyou for your reply what are the adjustment solenoids is it an expensive job, if I bought the car should I get it done for peace of mind ?

Gear problem, have asked this question before. How many actually fail? Nobody has an answere.

New genuine parts (A 272 051 01 77) are about £25 each plus the seals and are easily fitted. I'd ask the dealer to change them as part of the deal if they haven't already been changed.
This gives you an idea of what's entailed.
Good luck with the new car.
