Normally, the gearbox in my 99 320 CLK is pretty smooth and quiet, but, if going up hill, it selects a lower gear and then stays in it! That doesn't seem right to me as even if I back off the throttle it stays in the selected gear.

I just had the oil level checked and it is fine and the oil is a nice pale red colour.

Also if I accelerate hard (ish) it seems to hang onto gears longer than I would expect. Under normal, wafty sort of use it is fine, smooth as silk and changes early and 'slushes' along nicely.

Many thanks oh Wise ones :)

Doesn't sound right to me. I presume it's the same in W and S ? S should hold lower gears a bit longer but not ridiculously so. You might need to get the car on Star.

If it upshifts once you are over the hill and on level ground so to speak, then that sounds normal to me. It will need to downshift, otherwise you are lugging ghe engine.

As for the hard acceleration, if you accelerate hard out of bowhere and then take your foot off the accelerator suddenly, it will hold the gear for a few second longer 5-10 in case you get on it again, to eliminate the need for another downshift.

That's exactly what it's doing. If that's right, then so be it. Still seems slightly odd behaviour to me, but then, I am myself 'odd' so perhaps not the cars fault!

I used to think something is not right with mine when I first had my CLS. It was my first auto ever, but as I got to learn the car it became apparent that this is completely normal behaviour.

Just in case, I did the 'factory reset' on Thursday, it made a huge diference! Gearbox is now smooth and keen to change up regardless of incline. Feels much better :)
