Our CLK purchase of a couple of months ago has met and exceeded all expectations but one area did make us nervous. After Mrs D's previous lightweight front wheel drive hatch with minimal power and sensible tyre widths how would the CLK do on its AMG width low profile rubber in snow.

Well she is doing the relatives Christmas visit at the moment and luckily travelled over in the dry yesterday... only to wake up this morning to find it bumper deep. I think she'll give it a couple of days to thaw!! Snowshill snow Mercedes.JPG

On AMG width low profile tyres, I'd guess that will not move for a few days - unless it's sideways at first gentle press of the throttle!!

Small village in Cotswolds where the snow plough or gritter doesn't go!

Had a CLK270CDI one winter was enough to convince me to buy winter wheels & tyres.
Bought the wheels on eBay off an old CLK for £100, fitted 205/55/16 winter tyres. After that never got stuck anywhere, that was back in 2009.
Have a set of winter wheels & tyres for the E class & SLK, put them on in Oct off in April. My annual mileage is about the same on both sets.

clk ,great car, but we learnt the hard way ,leave it in garage if any chance of snow , the little A class is really quite good in snow , never ben stuck yet and if one just uses engine braking it does not really slide about too much either .

Anything rear wheel drive in snow / ice is crap

Thats why Germans usually have a winter set of tyres for there cars

On the other hand my Audi Quattro is fantastic in this weather

I covered 365 miles yesterday from west Yorkshire to Durham to Hereford, from the midlands down to Hereford was covered in snow. I was in my E220 and had no issues with traction at all, the reason I believe is that I have new winter tyres on. My previous E's just wouldn't move in the snow, I never fitted winter tyres to them previously as I used to use my Land Rover in the winter. I saw 4x4's in the ditch possibly due to over confidence.
Having the correct tyres is so important, anyone who doesn't believe in winter tyres should have joined me last night.

Re post #9 yes an A-class** would probably serve better for Mrs D's situation today which is even worse... a case of where's my CLK? There's been a little more snow and the farmer has "helpfully" put his plough down the road so now there's a wall of snow stopping the driver's door opening.

**An A-class was my choice for her when she first started looking as it would have met all her *needs*... however her *I want* overruled. I may look at one for myself in a year or so... one of the last of the old shape. Mercedes CLK at Bs Mon.jpg

Re snow driving and winter tyres etc. We've never had a problem with manual front wheel drive cars which is what we've had for decades. My own BMW 5-series is the first rear wheel drive we've had in three decades but it's manual and the tyres aren't too wide... and we've not really had much snow in Cambs for the 3+yrs I've owned it. This CLK is the first rear wheel drive auto we've owned in four decades since P6 V8 Rovers... and it's the first with "silly" tyre sizes. So yes I'm considering the spare wheel set with winter tyres but it's the usual question... a bit of hassle and storage which may only benefit a handful of days where we live.

Just as a matter of interest the best 2WD car in snow we've ever owned was a 1976 Citroen GS. Front wheel drive... tall and narrow 145x15 tyres and suspension you could raise. In 1980 on standard rubber it would run rings round everything bar a Land Rover. Cirtoen GS in snow.JPG

Agreed on the Citroen. I had a BX 1.4 on 175 rubber and it was simply superb in snow.

I've owned quite a few BXs and worked on many more. In the late 80s the introduction of the XUD turbo diesel, being the first mass market TD cars, paved the way for modern diesels combining performance, economy and acceptable smoothness/noise levels. During its time the TD XUD was never bettered for these character traits.
