Hi,

Am after your thoughts about this engine noise. The engine starts immediately, pulls strongly and idles smoothly.

After the initial start up as the engine settles into its regular idle speed it makes this sound. It is not obvious when on the move.

The engine is later than the balance shaft problem and to me this doesn’t sound like the timing chain (which seems to be louder, more metallic and less consistent on videos I’ve watched).

It seems to come from the left hand side of the engine as you stand in front and look at the car (ie the U.K. driver side).

Not sure if this is just “normal” for this engine or something I need to get checked. I’m not hugely mechanically minded.

Obviously this is quite a big old engine so I rather prevent than cure any problems.

Thanks in advance.

It was meant to have a minor service (including oil change) before we collected it. The oil does look clean.

Is that not an issue?

It’s my wife’s car and I will be getting our usual garage to check it over soon, but she has a longish trip this week and is struggling to get it in beforehand...

Ok ............. so its a recent purchase, was it from a MB dealer or independent trader ?
If independent, did they used a good quality and correct oil specification ?

get some Activ8 online, about size of a coke can, add it to the engine oil, should smooth thing out.

Oil additives only mask problems and can make things worse.

Not a MB dealer. I can’t be 100% on the oil used.

Have discovered the dealer didn’t use the right oil.

Car is with my usual (trusted) mechanic now for an oil change and the usual check over we have done when we buy a car.

Some Dealers/Traders will bung any oil & filter in to shift it off the car front.
