Just seen the news that crime figures have rocketed - the largest rise for ten years.
Violent crime up by 18%, robbery by 16% and sex offences by 14%.

The figures come as Home Office data shows the number of police officers is the lowest since 1985.
Nick Hurd, minister for policing and the fire service, said the links between police numbers and crime "are not as clear as people think".

I wonder how any faces it took to say that?

he shat himself if everybody reported 'every' crime that occurred , a good percentage of folk don't bother these days , due to lack of faith in the police

They think now is the time to get these figures out into the public domain then when Mayhem goes it can be attributed to her reign.

I live by the harbours edge.. there is a green and its swarming with kids when the tide is up and the weather is hot.. they are often out of control, (50 plus kids) 101 does not work as you can be waiting forever, and finally give up...
999 does not work either as dialling first 101, then the situation escalates, leading to two 999 calls, finally the police turn up -- 3 days later !
The kids know they will just get warning after warning with no consequence to their actions..
The system is broken and is in dire need of fixing...

Calling 101 is about as useful as calling the cat.

Once again we need to think what we are accepting from the people we voted into place to represent us.
- Maybe the time has come to echo the PM: Enough is enough!

The crime figures are of course a scandal but an open and honest discussion about the perpetrators and their support network is what's needed.
Blaming politicians for crime figures lets the people carrying out the crimes off the hook.
The subset feral society that operates in most towns and cities are ignored until their actions affect us directly.

"The other side of the street" that so many of us choose to cross to is full, it is our fault as a society we are being subsumed by crime.
Blaming everyone one else has gone on for years.

We need frank and unhindered discussions.

As per my original post above, the crime figures were released just as Home Office data showed the number of police officers is the lowest since 1985.
Government determines the numbers and the pay and expects these people to appear magically in fifty different places if there is a terror incident.

The statement by Nick Hurd, minister for policing and the fire service, who said the links between police numbers and crime "are not as clear as people think" just shows the utter disregard those in power have for the public. Since Theresa May became home secretary in 2010 total police numbers in England and Wales have fallen by 46,700 or 19.5%.

Quite simply rising crime and fewer police show the most damaging impacts of austerity. Rocket science it isn't.
- Yes we do need frank and unhindered discussions.
- But between whom?
- Those in power dismiss the shortage and say there's no problem so do you think for one moment they will listen to anyone?

I genuinely don't think numbers are the major issue thousands of officers appear for protests, events etc.

If the culture is a feral one who clearly are not bothered by being seen to commit crimes the answer lies in our society conforming to higher standards where we all engage and accept responsibility.
We all need to "have a go" at whatever level we can that intervention should be the norm it is time we stopped blaming everyone other than the perpetrators.
Theresa May is not responsible for the lower numbers, the Police like most other Public services budgets are shrinking to pay the Bankers gambling debts.
I am seeing the Open Golf and crime is almost non existent, thousands of people stand behind a rope as crowd control, the Police amble round just in case.

The underlying problem created by moving from proactive policing in the community to a reactive response force has led us to this point. Petty crime now seems to be accepted as just a fact of life, so the bar of acceptance seems to have been lifted which will and is undermining law and order itself

Crime figures are easy to manipulate as a lot of crime does go unrecorded, conversely if you wanted to reverse that it's easy enough to do

It's fair to say that the type of policing we have in the UK is due a rethink, but the elephant in the room is the reduction in benefits and community projects as most of the lesser crimes can be attributed to feral youth

I realise the police have many and varied tasks and of course we are still repaying the bankers disgraceful behaviour (helped by politicians who having been dazzled by the false promises of easy wealth, swept away many regulations. But our political leaders are the only ones who decide the policies including numbers, pay and set priorities (which in turn ripples down to Chief Constables).

The same political leaders have allowed - even, through cuts, caused prison conditions to fall to such dreadful levels that (July 2015) the Chief Inspector of Prisons said they were the worst for 10 years and then in 2016 he said they were even worse. Just four days ago he warned of 'staggering' decline in safety at youth jails ...
- So much for society's efforts to reform criminals!

btw: for those enjoying the golf - there are hundreds of pickpockets at that event - the local police will tell you!

Back in 2008 it was clear that as a country there was going to be pain ahead. The approaching financial issues would mean many people were going to go without. Higher taxation of varying kinds, cut backs across the social services have become common.

The result of greater apathy, less to lose for many and more lower intelligent types (but not always) losing respect for authority was easy to anticipate. The Govt's should have.
Greater policing of the streets should have been planned for, it may be reasonable to tell us that more policing is now needed for cyber crimes and terrorism, and while that is true it doesn't excuse the reducing police numbers generally.

I agree that we all should be pro active in helping against the rising crime, but if we don't feel there is a real police support that can be very risky. Then take a scenario where you need to defend yourself after 'putting yourself in a situation', you could find yourself being prosecuted, or badly injured.
