Hi all

Ok so my egr has been disabled. It throws a fault code and enters limp mode. So time to install the mod!

Here's a photo under the ml bonnet. 2002 ml270 cdi.

OK for starters are thé three black with grey angled clips at the top of the picture the ecu plugs? If that's correct then I will crack on and identify the correct pins.

Am I correct in saying there's just three connectors to find/make: egr transducer pin 50 plug 3, 12v pin 37 plug 3 and maf pin 5 (pin 24/plug 3)?

Thanks

Simon

Yes

Yes but don't rely on pin numbers, check the colour of the wires or better still continuity with a meter

Just a final question, which plug is which on my ecu? See the attached image on my previous post.

Many thanks

On mine, pin 21 (MAF) is on the 1st plug from right (not the square one) and the other two are on the next plug. As said earlier, please check wire colours

All the plugs have numbers on the ECU - unplug them and look at the ECU sockets with a torch.

Also, if you match wire colours with plug numbers, you will have found the correct plug.

Success! Many thanks to the OP and those offering advice. All working fine.

So, 2002 face lift ml270

Maf pin 5 yellow/white pin 24 on plug 4 ecu
+12v red/grey pin 37 on plug 3 ecu
Egr transducer grey/black pin 50 on plug 3 ecu

And the plugs are indeed numbered on the ecu. On mine the plugs are numbered from right to left as you face the front of the vehicle.

Unfortunately in the process of fixing this issue I've just noticed that two of the injector seals are chuffing despite paying the local garage to fix them last month. They will just have to do it again FOC. Wish there was a specialist in North Devon, I don't think we'll get another merc purely for that reason. Nearest to us is exeter main dealer 1.5 hours away.

Can I ask as can't seem to find it in the thread (not reading all 1k+ posts)

Can this be done in a 651 250CDI engine? Just asking more out of curiosity.

And I've got through a couple more Mercs since you sent me a great Explanatory with photos showing how to do this mod. Thanks Simon - I've used your pics, with appropriate adjustments, to modify two more MB's, a Jeep and a Panda Multijet.

Hi all , I am currently trying this MOD on my 01 E220CDI , I believe I have followed the instructions properly but I'm not getting the desired result, car is still going to limp mode but also revving by itself , any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm beginning to loose the plot with it

It would be useful for other forum members to say what you figured out, even if it was an embarrassing little mistake.

I have made one of these today. Many thanks to those involved over the years.
It was worth reading ALL the posts on 102 pages... a first for me with any forum!

To the experts, would this also work..?

The vacuum module that moves the EGR valve has about 6 or 7 mm of movement (on the OM613).

If one was to insert a spacer greater than this dimension between the valve and the module using three longer setscrews...it would not work, mechanically remaining closed but the system logic would remain unperturbed?

Occam's Razor

that's a damned fine piece of lateral thinking there. Like keeping medicines out of the reach of children. I actually used way too long bolts with a load of nuts on to make it easier to remove than the screws that were used at the factory. if only I had been thinking sideways.

when you have done this mod does anything have to be done with the swirl flaps in the manifold?

yes, you need to

dislocate the actuating rod, and sort of sling it out of harm's way, while still letting it run through its range of movement. Either fix the flaps open or closed, I can't recall exactly.
It completes the fooling of the system.
