Do I need a new one?

Jacked up rear of my 211 E class estate to try to find Airmatic leak and discovered this shock absorber looking thing with a perished cover! Anyone tell me what it is ad do I need a new one? No luck finding the Airmatic leak yet. Was hoping to find loose hose.

No you just need a new outer 'dust' cover.

Weird how the shock is so so perished and covered in crud yet the strut behind looks relatively clean?
I would want to get that gaitor changed asap before the piston corrodes and crude wrecks the seal.
