Do I need a new one?

    Jacked up rear of my 211 E class estate to try to find Airmatic leak and discovered this shock absorber looking thing with a perished cover! Anyone tell me what it is ad do I need a new one? No luck finding the Airmatic leak yet. Was hoping to find loose hose. IMG_3291.JPG IMG_3290.JPG

    It looks like just the gator to me to keep the crap out but without it the shocker will soon perish.

    Weird how the shock is so so perished and covered in crud yet the strut behind looks relatively clean?
    I would want to get that gaitor changed asap before the piston corrodes and crude wrecks the seal.
