Mine has bothered me since I got the car, its a bit dented and scratched, I suppose its in the firing line when the car is loaded. I had a look at it the other day and there is also a gap between the trim and the boot seal, I suppose it gets pushed flat when the boot closes.

There are a number of clips along the aperture but they don't appear to be doing anything. I think they should clip to that leading edge to hold the chrome down

it all needs a good clean.
All the clips look the same so are they all broken? I imagine they are pence even from merc. I'm keeping an eye open for a replacement chrome piece as they are over £100 from merc but it may come to that in the end.

Has anyone done this and/or can confirm that the clips are broken?

Thanks David

Malcolm, If you remove the chrome trim you reveal the striker plate and its little chrome piece which spings up when the boot opens and the boot seal. Along the edge of the aperture just inside the seal are about 7 of these.
Currently they don't appear to do anything although I couldn't see anything obviously broken. The chrome piece hooks over the striker cover but neither is really attached to the bumper.
Hoping that helps somehow

David

Please pop up a picture much further away and I can check, I do not know the 212 well enough to see what I am looking at.

Will do. They're a bit too focussed, seemed the most relevant at the time! s211 not 212.
Thanks

Yours is the estate, no wonder I could not find it, its a rear door rather than boot.

Those clips (square) are expanding rivets there is a square hole where the first part of the clip presses in, there is a center part (missing in your case) that you press in and the main body expands, locking it all in place.

Every dealer has them in stock (so do I :D)

Will do. I'll wait to find a decent ornamental trim as they seem to call it.
Thanks for your help

Reading the part numbers I posted up the modified replacement will be a large round flat head expanding rivet. the originals are very weak and the plastic breaks away from where the clips fit so that they do nothing. the new version will solve the problem:D they are about 10/12mm round.

He may not be here but posthumous thanks to Malcolm for his help with this. New trim panel sourced through ebay and clips ordered from MB so a shiny new rear end will be had!.

As per Malcolm's post - new ones are A 0009983385.
MB Swindon have confirmed that 4 are required so I ordered 5. £1.08 each.

Ah, found a flaw. The securing clips are 370 in the image above which is A2116980114. 6 altogether.
390 are the plastic captive nuts (5 of) which you screw the ornamental trim onto on the inside rim of the boot aperture

Just to finish this off. Clips are 8.40+vat for 6 (you need 5) direct from MB. Ignore the chancers on ebay asking 4.95 each!
I have one "limb" snapped off all my old ones so this should fit. NOS chrome trim from ebay for £40.
